In a bold move to compete directly with Tesla, Xpeng has unveiled the P7+, an electric sedan designed to challenge the renowned Model 3. With a compelling entry price below $30,000, Xpeng is offering full self-driving capabilities and autoparking features at no additional cost. This positions the P7+ as a formidable competitor, especially in the rapidly evolving Chinese EV market.
As key players in China such as BYD, NIO, and Xpeng continue to enhance their advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), Xpeng’s P7+ stands out. It boasts a pricing strategy that is around 10% less expensive than Tesla’s most affordable model. Deemed “the first AI car” by Xpeng, the P7+ capitalizes on artificial intelligence to manage everything from autonomous driving to maximizing energy efficiency, skipping the use of LiDAR and instead utilizing their new Eagle Eye vision technology.
This innovative approach of merging AI with enhanced camera and sensor systems allows the P7+ to map an area equivalent to two football fields in diverse weather and road conditions, showcasing superior navigation and safety technology. By the end of the year, Xpeng aims to implement its autonomous driving technology across all major cities and highways, thereby entering territories where Tesla’s FSD is still pending approval in China.
Beyond its robust AI-driven system, the P7+ impresses with extended range capabilities slightly surpassing the Model 3. It employs dual Nvidia Orin X chips for its self-driving software, while its infotainment system runs on the advanced Snapdragon 8295 processor. Furthermore, the vehicle’s AI-optimized powertrain demonstrates an efficiency of approximately 18 kWh per 100 miles, and its fast-charging capability is supported by a cutting-edge 800V architecture.
Starting pre-orders at a competitive $29,610, the P7+ is anticipated to attract significant attention once it officially launches in the coming month. As Tesla faces increasing competition in China’s “new energy” vehicle segment, which saw the company securing just 6.4% of sales last month, Xpeng’s innovative and aggressively priced offering may well be a catalyst for further shifts within the market.
