Outward 2 Beta Now Available as Nine Dots Studio Prepares for Early Access Launch
Nine Dots Studio has opened the doors for players to get an early look at Outward 2, the upcoming sequel to its open-world survival action RPG. The game is set in the harsh and unpredictable world of Aurai, where survival depends less on heroic destiny and more on planning, patience, and smart decision-making.
Unlike many fantasy RPGs, Outward 2 does not cast you as a chosen hero blessed with supernatural power from the start. Instead, you begin as an ordinary person trying to survive in a dangerous world that rarely offers second chances. Every journey requires preparation, every fight carries risk, and every mistake can lead to lasting consequences.
Outward 2 continues the series’ focus on immersive adventure, survival mechanics, tactical combat, and meaningful exploration. Players will need to think carefully before heading into the wilderness, whether that means packing enough supplies, choosing the right weapons, setting traps before battle, or dropping a heavy backpack before combat to move more freely.
Aurai is not a forgiving place. If you fall in battle, death is not always the end, but it does not simply reset your progress either. You may wake up injured in town, lose your belongings, be rescued by a stranger, or find yourself in an even worse situation than before. The world moves forward, and you must deal with the consequences.
One of the biggest appeals of Outward 2 is its approach to character progression. You do not begin as a legendary warrior or powerful mage. Your story starts from humble beginnings, shaped by three different starting scenarios and eleven background options. These choices determine where your journey begins and how you fit into the world.
You might start as a devoted follower of Elatt hoping to make a fortune in the mines, or as a struggling vagrant in Simeon’s Bastion. No matter where you begin, Aurai will test you quickly. The game is designed around the idea that growth comes through experience, failure, and adaptation rather than traditional power fantasy.
The sequel also introduces a living world with a full seasonal cycle. Over the course of an in-game year, Aurai changes in ways that affect exploration and strategy. Merchants and NPCs may move to new locations, frozen rivers can become passable during winter, and different regions will present unique environmental threats.
Outward 2 features four distinct areas, each with its own biome, seasonal conditions, and gameplay challenges. Players may have to endure the brutal blizzards of the Gilded Mountains or survive the dangerous acid rains in the Gathes of Catharsis. These shifting conditions are meant to keep travel fresh, dangerous, and rewarding.
Combat in Outward 2 has also been expanded and refined based on feedback from the original game. Each weapon has its own moveset, encouraging players to experiment with different fighting styles and equipment combinations. The sequel promises smoother animations, more fluid control, and a wider range of tools for handling difficult encounters.
Magic is also more involved than simply pressing a button. Spellcasting in Outward 2 uses ritual-based systems that require setup and planning. For example, a player may send a fire stone into the air to create a ring of flame, empowering attacks and abilities with fire damage. This approach makes magic feel more tactical and deliberate, fitting the game’s survival-focused design.
Another major feature is the new Exercise system, which rewards players based on how they actually play. Your passive skills can develop naturally depending on your armor, weapons, and combat habits. Special trainers found throughout Aurai can also teach valuable survival and combat techniques, though their knowledge comes at a price.
Inventory management remains a central part of the Outward experience. Your backpack is one of your most important tools, but space is limited. Before leaving on an expedition, you must decide what to bring: food, potions, weapons, camping gear, crafting materials, and other essentials. During the journey, every item you collect forces another decision about what is truly worth carrying.
In combat, carrying too much can become dangerous. Players may choose to drop their backpack before a fight to dodge and move more effectively. Outward 2 adds a mule that can help carry supplies, but even that comes with risk. Since the mule can be vulnerable, players must consider how to protect it and whether bringing it along is worth the danger.
For players who prefer to face Aurai with a companion, Outward 2 supports both two-player split-screen and online co-op. Teaming up with a friend allows players to combine strengths, cover weaknesses, and approach challenges in more creative ways. In a world as punishing as Aurai, cooperation can make survival more manageable, though poor planning can still lead to disaster.
Outward 2 is scheduled to launch in early access for Windows PC on July 7 through Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. A closed beta is also planned for May 26, giving selected players a chance to experience the game before its wider early access release.
With its focus on survival, tactical preparation, meaningful consequences, and co-op adventure, Outward 2 is shaping up to be a strong follow-up for fans of the original. Players looking for an open-world RPG that rewards patience and strategy over raw power may find Aurai worth exploring again.
