Under the visionary leadership of Tim Cook, Apple has successfully revolutionized the smartwatch industry, rapidly evolving to offer health-centric features that not only save lives but also encourage users to rethink their lifestyles. With the introduction of similar health features in the second-generation AirPods Pro, Apple’s horizon seems limitless, sparking curiosity about its potential ventures into new territories like smart rings. However, Tom Hale, CEO of Oura, a leading smart ring manufacturer, believes that Apple might not pursue this market due to the complexities involved in creating such products and the potential impact on Apple Watch sales.
In an engaging conversation with CNBC at the Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, Hale expressed skepticism regarding Apple’s interest in smart rings. He pointed out that Apple remains uncertain about the practicality of having both a smart ring and a watch on the same hand. Meanwhile, Samsung, a formidable rival in the smartphone arena, has recently unveiled the Galaxy Ring, designed to complement its Galaxy Watch series.
Hale stated, “I think Apple is unconvinced about the value of pairing a ring with a watch and wary of undercutting the Apple Watch’s success. They’re likely observing Samsung and us closely, but mastering this product category is incredibly challenging.”
While there are no indications that Apple is actively developing a smart ring, this doesn’t exclude the possibility of prototypes being evaluated privately. At present, a smart ring remains more of a conceptual idea for Apple than a product line under serious consideration. Nonetheless, Apple’s track history suggests that the company often makes late-market entries that unsettle its competitors.
A prime example is the introduction of AirTags, which prompted an outcry from Tile CEO CJ Prober over concerns about stifled competition, even calling for U.S. Congressional intervention. It will certainly be intriguing to see how Oura’s Hale responds should Apple decide to surprise the market with its own smart ring.
Keep a lookout for this evolving saga as the technology realm waits with bated breath to see Apple’s next move.
