OpenAI’s First Consumer AI Gadget Could Be “Sweetpea” Smart Earbuds

OpenAI’s long-rumored first consumer hardware is no longer just whisper-level speculation. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, offered an early tease that signals the company is getting serious about bringing an AI device to everyday users.

During a discussion at the Axios House Davos event, Lehane said OpenAI’s first consumer AI device is one of the company’s highest priorities this year, with a launch currently planned for the second half of 2026. The comments effectively move the project from “maybe someday” into an official timeline—without fully revealing what the product will look like or how it will work.

More reporting from Taiwan’s Economic Daily suggests OpenAI may be aiming for a September 2026 release window. The same report claims OpenAI is targeting an ambitious first-year sales goal of 40 million to 50 million units and that manufacturing could be handled by Foxconn, with production based in Vietnam. If accurate, those numbers hint at a mass-market launch rather than a niche experiment—and suggest OpenAI is preparing to compete in consumer electronics at scale.

So what is this first OpenAI consumer device likely to be? Recent reports point to AI-powered earbuds under the internal codename “Sweetpea.” The concept is expected to lean heavily on cloud-based AI processing while still including some on-device capabilities. One detail being discussed is the use of a 2nm Samsung Exynos chip to handle certain tasks locally, potentially balancing responsiveness, privacy, and power efficiency while keeping more demanding AI workloads in the cloud.

At the same time, OpenAI is also said to be exploring a second consumer gadget with a very different approach. This device reportedly carries the internal codename “Gumdrop” and is described as pen-shaped, with a compact size compared to an Apple iPod Shuffle. Notably, it’s said to have no dedicated screen, which suggests OpenAI may be experimenting with a new kind of “ambient” AI experience—one that relies on voice, sensors, and seamless integration rather than traditional apps and displays.

The rumored “Gumdrop” device is said to include contextual awareness through a suite of sensors, including cameras and microphones. It may be capable of running tailored OpenAI models locally, while still tapping cloud computing for heavier tasks. One practical feature mentioned is the ability to convert handwritten notes into text and upload them directly to ChatGPT, potentially turning quick scribbles into organized, searchable information. It’s also expected to communicate with other devices in a way that mirrors how smartphones connect and share data today.

In terms of portability, it’s not expected to be a wearable in the typical sense, but it could be carried in a pocket or worn around the neck. Current expectations place its launch in 2026 or 2027.
