The company has teamed up with Jony Ive to shape a new generation of AI-powered devices—and it isn’t stopping there. Recent reports indicate OpenAI has been actively recruiting from Apple’s ranks and engaging with key suppliers to turn its hardware vision into reality.
To speed up development, OpenAI has brought on roughly two dozen former Apple employees, including industrial designers, hardware engineers, and user interface specialists. Among the standout hires are manufacturing design veteran Matt Theobald and human interface design leader Cyrus Daniel Irani. These recruits bring deep experience building polished, design-first products, signaling that OpenAI wants its hardware to pair cutting-edge AI with the kind of thoughtful aesthetics and usability Apple is known for.
The strategy appears to go beyond talent. OpenAI is reportedly in talks with major suppliers such as Luxshare and Goertek for components and assembly, a move that could help the company scale from concept to consumer-ready products. Early explorations allegedly include devices like a digital voice recorder and a wearable pin, with an internal target to launch as soon as late 2026 or early 2027.
Why the aggressive push? Alongside competitive compensation, OpenAI is appealing to would-be hires with the chance to build entirely new categories of AI-driven products—tools that move beyond screens and apps to become ambient, assistive, and ever-present.
