The Frontier II wind farm in Oklahoma recently experienced the unexpected collapse of one of its turbines. This incident is particularly puzzling as it occurred on a day with calm weather conditions, raising questions about the underlying cause.
The site, operational since March 2021, is equipped with 74 Nordex N149/4.XMW turbines, each capable of generating a robust 4 megawatts of power. These turbines boast impressive dimensions with a rotor diameter of 149.1 meters and can have a hub height reaching up to 164 meters, depending on their location. Despite the collapse, Nordex, the manufacturer, has reported that there was only material damage and no injuries.
The land’s tranquility at the time of the incident further deepens the mystery. Consequently, Nordex has put together a specialized team to probe the situation extensively in cooperation with Deriva Energy, the farm’s operator, to uncover what led to this unusual event.
The farm’s management reassures that safety measures are well in place, confirming that all employees are unharmed and the facility continues to operate securely and effectively. A spokesperson from Deriva Energy emphasized, “All employees are safe and accounted for, and the site is secure. The plant remains safe and operational.”
