Nvidia Unveils the GeForce RTX 5070: A New GPU Powered by 12GB of GDDR7 Memory

Nvidia has officially introduced a new GeForce RTX 5070 laptop GPU option with 12GB of VRAM, giving gaming laptop buyers another choice between the existing RTX 5070 and the higher-tier RTX 5070 Ti. The new model uses 3GB GDDR7 memory modules, a move designed to expand available memory supply and help manufacturers build more configurations at a time when demand for GeForce RTX GPUs remains high.

While the RTX 5070 12GB laptop GPU has been rumored for a while, Nvidia hadn’t publicly addressed it until now. In fact, several laptop makers had already hinted at the “GeForce RTX 5070 12GB” name in product materials going back to March, before those references quickly disappeared. As April wraps up, Nvidia has now confirmed the 12GB configuration is real and on the way—though the announcement arrived in an unusual place: included as part of a GeForce Game Ready Driver update rather than a standalone product reveal.

According to Nvidia, memory supply constraints are the key reason this new RTX 5070 laptop GPU configuration exists. By releasing a 12GB version built around 24Gb GDDR7 memory, Nvidia says its partners can tap into an additional pool of memory to complement the 16Gb GDDR7 supply used by most current GeForce laptop GPUs. In practical terms, this should help laptop brands ship a wider range of RTX 5070 gaming laptops, offering both the current 8GB option and the new 12GB option depending on the model and target price.

Shipping is expected to begin around June 2026. Several upcoming gaming laptops are already lined up to use the RTX 5070 12GB laptop GPU, including the Apex 16 Max and Apex 17. The new 12GB GPU has also been associated with models such as MSI’s Crosshair 16 Max EX E2WGXK, along with multiple Lenovo lines, including the Legion Pro 5 16ADR10, Legion Pro 5 16IRX10, LOQ 15IRX10, and LOQ 17IRX10.

That said, buyers expecting a big value gap between the RTX 5070 12GB and RTX 5070 Ti may want to watch pricing closely. XMG has cautioned that laptops equipped with the RTX 5070 12GB could end up costing nearly as much as current RTX 5070 Ti configurations, which could make shopping decisions more complicated. If pricing lands too close to RTX 5070 Ti systems, some shoppers may prefer stepping up to the faster tier rather than paying a premium mainly for additional VRAM.

For anyone planning a gaming laptop purchase in mid-2026, the RTX 5070 12GB laptop GPU is shaping up to be an important new option—especially for buyers who want more VRAM than 8GB without automatically jumping to an RTX 5070 Ti, assuming the final laptop prices create meaningful separation between the tiers.
