NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 24GB Could Launch Soon as GPU Prices Keep Climbing
NVIDIA appears to be preparing a major addition to its RTX 50-series lineup, with the GeForce RTX 5080 24GB reportedly moving toward launch earlier than many expected. The new graphics card is expected to offer a significant memory upgrade over the current RTX 5080 16GB model, giving gamers, creators, and local AI users more VRAM to work with.
According to recent supply chain chatter, the GeForce RTX 5080 24GB could arrive as early as December 2026, though January 2027 is currently viewed as the more likely launch window. A January debut would also make sense because NVIDIA could introduce the card during its CES 2027 presentation, giving the company a major stage for its next high-end GPU announcement.
The timing is important because graphics card prices are already under heavy pressure. Memory supply concerns have been growing across the industry, with major DRAM manufacturers warning that tight supply conditions may continue for years. These constraints are expected to become even more challenging, especially as demand from AI hardware, gaming PCs, data centers, and professional workstations continues to rise.
That puts the rumored RTX 5080 24GB in an interesting but potentially expensive position. While the extra VRAM would make the card more attractive than the existing 16GB model, the higher memory configuration could also push pricing well above the current RTX 5080’s original suggested price. Recent market trends have already shown premium GPUs selling far above MSRP, with high-end models reaching extreme price levels in some regions.
One major point from the latest reports is that NVIDIA may shift its focus in China toward the RTX 5080 24GB. Existing models such as the RTX 5090D V2 and RTX 5080 16GB are reportedly set to be phased out for that market. NVIDIA is said to have already prepared enough RTX 5080 16GB inventory to cover roughly two months of demand, which could bridge the gap until the newer 24GB card becomes available.
The biggest unanswered question is whether this GeForce RTX 5080 24GB will simply be a standard RTX 5080 with more memory or whether it will be closer to the previously rumored RTX 5080 SUPER. That distinction matters because a true upgraded version could bring more than just additional VRAM.
The rumored RTX 5080 SUPER was previously expected to use a GB203-450 GPU, compared to the GB203-400 chip used in the standard RTX 5080. It was also rumored to feature higher clock speeds, 24GB of GDDR7 memory, faster 32Gbps memory compared to 30Gbps on the standard card, and increased memory bandwidth of around 1024GB/s versus 960GB/s. Power consumption was also expected to rise, with a possible total board power of 415W compared to 360W on the regular RTX 5080.
If the upcoming 24GB model includes those upgrades, it could offer a noticeable performance improvement in demanding games, content creation workloads, and AI tasks. However, if NVIDIA only increases the VRAM while keeping the rest of the specifications close to the current RTX 5080 16GB, the performance gain may be more limited. In that case, buyers could end up paying a large premium mainly for the extra memory.
The 24GB VRAM capacity could make the card especially appealing for local AI workloads. NVIDIA has been placing more emphasis on AI performance across its consumer GPU lineup, and high-memory graphics cards are increasingly being purchased for AI development, model testing, and inference workloads. That could create another challenge for gamers, as AI buyers may compete for the same stock, potentially driving prices even higher.
For PC gamers, the GeForce RTX 5080 24GB could become one of the most desirable high-end GPUs in the RTX 50-series family. More VRAM is becoming increasingly valuable as modern games use larger textures, higher-resolution assets, advanced ray tracing, and more demanding frame generation technologies. A 24GB RTX 5080 would likely offer more breathing room for 4K gaming and future titles compared to the 16GB version.
Still, price and availability will decide how attractive the card really is. If memory shortages continue and AI demand remains strong, the RTX 5080 24GB may launch into a market where supply is tight and retail prices are inflated from day one. That could make it a powerful but costly upgrade for anyone building a high-end gaming PC in 2027.
For now, the GeForce RTX 5080 24GB remains unofficial, but reports suggest NVIDIA is accelerating its launch plans. If the card appears around December 2026 or January 2027, it could become one of the most talked-about GPU releases of the year, especially if it combines larger VRAM, faster GDDR7 memory, and improved performance over the standard RTX 5080.
