Notion Mail Is Shutting Down as Notion Shifts Focus to AI Email Agents
Notion is closing down Notion Mail, its email inbox product, on September 22, as the company moves deeper into AI-powered productivity. Instead of continuing to build a traditional email client, Notion says it will focus on AI agents that can manage inbox tasks for users automatically.
The company explained that user behavior has changed significantly as its AI tools have improved. According to Notion, more than half of Notion Mail users now manage email workflows without opening their inbox at all. That shift has encouraged the company to put its resources behind AI agents designed to run and organize email more efficiently.
Notion Mail is connected to Gmail, so users do not need to worry about losing their existing emails. Messages will remain in Gmail even after Notion Mail shuts down. However, anyone using Notion Mail should take action before the September 22 deadline if they want to keep certain items.
Users will need to export drafts and scheduled emails if they want to save them. Notion also says snippets and auto-label instructions can be exported and reused in other tools. The company has emphasized that its email-based AI agents will continue working even after the Notion Mail inbox is discontinued.
Notion first introduced its email product in preview mode in 2024, following its acquisition of Skiff, a productivity startup known for its focus on security. The goal was to combine email with Notion AI, offering features such as automatic labeling, email filtering, and scheduling assistance.
The product became available to more users in April 2025 as Notion looked to compete in the growing market for smarter, AI-enhanced email tools. However, the company now appears to believe that the future of email is less about opening an inbox and more about letting AI agents handle repetitive communication tasks in the background.
The shutdown of Notion Mail reflects a broader shift in productivity software. Companies are increasingly building tools that reduce manual work, automate inbox management, and help users focus on higher-value tasks. For Notion, that means moving away from a standalone email inbox and doubling down on AI agents that can organize, prioritize, and manage email workflows.
For current Notion Mail users, the most important step is to prepare before September 22. Emails will remain safe in Gmail, but drafts, scheduled messages, snippets, and labeling rules may need to be exported manually.
