Nintendo is gearing up for the launch of its next-generation console, the Switch 2, which is expected to hit the market in 2025. With a strategic focus on overcoming the initial supply challenges faced by the original Nintendo Switch in 2017, Nintendo is taking proactive steps to meet the anticipated high demand for the new console. Shuntaro Furukawa, the company president, indicated during a recent earnings Q&A that they are prepared to take significant production risks to ensure that fans can get their hands on the Switch 2 as soon as possible.
The move to ramp up production reflects lessons learned during the first Switch’s launch when supply constraints left many eager consumers unable to purchase the console immediately. The company plans to reveal more details about production levels in April when they announce their business plan for the next financial year. This announcement will coincide with the much-awaited Switch 2-themed Nintendo Direct on April 2, after which Nintendo will gauge consumer interest.
Furukawa emphasized the role of “dedicated software” at the console’s release, hinting that while there may not be a slew of new games simultaneously available for both the original Switch and the Switch 2, backward compatibility would facilitate a smoother transition for users. Currently, the only confirmed title set to launch with the Switch 2 is a new version of Mario Kart, though it’s uncertain if this will also be available for the current Switch lineup.
As excitement builds, more information about the Switch 2’s pricing will be available during the upcoming Switch 2 Direct event. Despite these developments, Nintendo has no plans to alter the pricing of the existing Switch consoles for the time being. Moreover, while the company has scaled back on mobile app endeavors in recent years, it continues to innovate by integrating smartphones into its gaming ecosystem, creating new gaming apps.
In a triumphant moment for Nintendo, the original Switch has celebrated a milestone, surpassing 150 million units sold globally. This achievement brings it ever closer to rivaling the iconic Nintendo DS in total sales, a testament to the enduring popularity and success of the Switch platform.
