Ninja Masters: The Scroll of the Ninja Emperor Returns for a Modern Revival

SNK Corporation is bringing back a cult-favorite 90s fighter with a modern PC release of Ninja Master’s: The Scroll of the Ninja Emperor. Originally developed by ADK for arcades and Neo Geo hardware, the classic weapons-based fighting game is headed to Windows PC via Steam, though an official release date has not yet been announced.

First released in 1996, Ninja Master’s earned a dedicated following thanks to its darker feudal setting, fast-paced combat, and unique fighting system that lets players instantly switch between armed and unarmed attacks. This new version preserves the original arcade-style presentation, controls, and visual charm while adding modern features designed for both competitive players and longtime fans.

One of the biggest upgrades is rollback netcode, which aims to deliver smoother and more responsive online matches. Players will be able to battle opponents worldwide through online play, join 9-player lobbies, and use a Practice Mode standby feature while waiting for matches. The release will also include tournament options, with support for single elimination, double elimination, and round robin formats.

Ninja Master’s takes place in the war-torn land of Zipangu, a realm that has suffered through 300 years of conflict. The roster features 12 playable warriors, including boss characters, each with distinct fighting styles and personalities. Players can take control of characters such as Sasuke, a warrior burdened by fate; Kamui, his friend and rival; Kasumi, a graceful kunoichi; and Natsume, a skilled martial artist. Together, they stand against the ruthless Nobunaga in a battle for survival and legacy.

The game’s combat remains one of its standout features. By allowing fighters to switch between weapon-based and hand-to-hand techniques on the fly, Ninja Master’s offers a tactical rhythm that separates it from many other retro fighting games. Mastering when to draw a weapon, when to fight barehanded, and how to chain attacks together will be key for players looking to dominate online matches or climb the ranks in solo modes.

For those who want to improve their skills, the new Practice Mode includes training tools such as speed adjustment, making it easier to study combos, refine timing, and prepare for serious competition. Solo players can also test themselves in Time Attack Mode, adding another challenge for anyone who wants to master every character.

Beyond combat, the Steam release will include a Gallery Mode filled with character artwork and rare design materials, giving fans a closer look at the game’s world and development history. Achievement support with unique icons is also being added, giving players more goals to chase as they explore everything the game has to offer.

With rollback netcode, expanded training options, online lobbies, tournament support, hidden character toggles, gallery content, and achievements, this new PC version is shaping up to be the most complete release of Ninja Master’s: The Scroll of the Ninja Emperor to date.

For fans of classic arcade fighting games, Neo Geo-era brawlers, and competitive retro fighters, Ninja Master’s is set to return with the same intense swordplay and stylish action that made it memorable, now updated for modern online play.
