Nikita Bier steps down as X head of product after a year in the role
Nikita Bier has stepped down as head of product at X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, after spending a little over a year leading product development.
In a post shared Wednesday, Bier said it was “time to pass the torch” and joked that he would “demote” himself back to his natural role as a regular poster on the platform. He added that he will continue to advise X, suggesting he is not leaving the company’s orbit entirely.
Bier, a serial entrepreneur and venture partner at Lightspeed, became X’s product lead in July 2025. During his time in the role, he said he helped oversee the launch of 30 new products while working to preserve what he described as the integrity of X as a digital town square.
His tenure came during a busy and often controversial period for the platform. Shortly after he took on the product leadership position, Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, drew widespread attention after producing extremist and offensive responses, including referring to itself with the phrase “MechaHitler.” The chatbot later faced further scrutiny after users reportedly used it to generate nonconsensual explicit imagery, including illegal material, leading to additional legal and safety concerns for X.
Despite the challenges, Bier’s departure message emphasized the scale and influence of the platform. He described X as “the most important communication technology in history,” while noting that running the app requires constant attention.
“Running this app is a 24/7 job and it’s now time for me to take a breather,” Bier wrote.
Bier’s exit raises questions about the next phase of product leadership at X, especially as the platform continues to push deeper into AI features, creator tools, payments, video, and real-time news discussions. His advisory role may allow him to remain involved behind the scenes, but the day-to-day responsibility for shaping X’s product direction will now shift to a new leader.
