Wyze has recently introduced its latest security camera, the Wyze Cam v4, advancing its line of cost-effective security solutions. Known for providing affordable alternatives to higher-priced options like Ring cameras, Wyze continues to make home security accessible with the new v4 priced at just $35.98.
The Wyze Cam v4 distinguishes itself with several notable upgrades from its predecessor, the Wyze Cam v3 Pro. It offers a wider dynamic range in video recordings, ensuring clearer and more detailed footages in diverse lighting conditions. With a weight that’s 85% heavier than the Wyze Cam v3 Pro, it feels more robust and substantial. Connectivity has been enhanced by Wi-Fi 6 technology, offering a more reliable wireless experience compared to the older 802.11n standard. Storage options have also been expanded, as the v4 model supports micro SD cards with capacities up to 512 GB compared to v3 Pro’s 256 GB.
Audio capabilities have seen substantial improvements, featuring a louder 99 dB speaker for better alert dissemination and an improved microphone pickup for clearer audio capture. An added benefit is the integration of a built-in siren, increasing the camera’s deterrent capabilities.
Similarities with the previous model include the Starlight CMOS sensor, capable of recording color videos both during the day and night, as well as black and white infrared videos in low-light conditions. The enhanced resolution of 2560 x 1440 maintains the wide dynamic range, recording at 20 fps during daylight and 15 fps at night. Low-light vision is delivered through two 72 lumen LED spotlights or four 850 nm IR LEDs, offering versatile night vision options. The lens covers a 98.5-degree horizontal field of view and a 53.1-degree vertical field of view. Its durability and practicality are apparent as it carries an IP65 water resistance rating, suitable for outdoor use.
The camera provides unlimited cloud recording and AI person/object detection with an active subscription. Without a subscription, users can still benefit from continuous loop recording on a micro SD card up to 512 GB, alongside basic motion detection features. Notably, the device lacks RTSP support. Its compact dimensions, weighing 0.49 lb. and measuring just over 2 inches cubed, make it easy to install in various locations. Connectivity options are facilitated through Bluetooth 5.2 and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6. A 5V 1A micro USB power supply is required for the camera’s operation.
Compatibility enhances the Wyze Cam v4’s functionality, working in conjunction with accessories like the Wyze Lamp Socket, Wyze Cam Window Mount, and others, while maintaining up to 512 GB Wyze microSD card compatibility. However, users must note that it does not work with some Wyze accessories such as the Wyze Cam Floodlight v1.
Customers should be aware of evolving criminal tactics, such as using Wi-Fi jammers to disable wireless security cameras. Though potentially more costly, a hard-wired security system paired with an uninterruptible power supply can offer immunity against such attacks, ensuring continued surveillance during a jamming attempt.
The new Wyze Cam v4 underscores the company’s commitment to deliver enhanced security features at an accessible price point, making it a noteworthy consideration for those looking to secure their homes or businesses. With the upgrades in imaging, sound, storage, and connectivity, the v4 is poised to be a valuable addition to any security setup.
