Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 may be expensive for phone makers, but it’s exactly what many Android buyers want. A recent Qualcomm-commissioned survey reported that shoppers are three times more likely to choose a device with a Snapdragon processor and are willing to pay about a 16 percent premium for it. The same poll suggests 84 percent of respondents see Qualcomm as the leader in smartphone chipsets, underscoring the brand’s strong pull at the high end.
That popularity creates a real dilemma for one of the biggest players in Android. Samsung is working to cut chipset costs by pushing its in-house Exynos 2600 in the upcoming Galaxy S26 lineup. Yet next year’s models are still expected to ship mostly with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 inside—reportedly around 75 percent of total units—due to an existing agreement. Walking away from that arrangement could trigger penalties, making a full Exynos switch unlikely in the near term.
There are important caveats to the survey. It was conducted by Qualcomm, and the Korean report highlighting it did not disclose the market research firm or the sample size. Without those details, it’s hard to gauge how representative the results are. Still, the findings align with the broader perception that Snapdragon-powered phones dominate buyer mindshare in the flagship space.
For Qualcomm’s hardware partners, the choice is stark: stick with Snapdragon and pay more for elite performance and brand equity, or pivot to alternatives like MediaTek’s Dimensity series and fight consumer perception. That tension is especially clear for Samsung. The company had a shot at breaking free from dependence on external chip suppliers by doubling down on high-end Exynos development. But past disappointments dented confidence, especially among power users who now view Snapdragon as the safe bet for performance, efficiency, and connectivity.
There are signs the Exynos 2600 could change the narrative. Early chatter suggests meaningful improvements, but rebuilding trust takes time and real-world results. If Samsung delivers with the Galaxy S26, it could regain momentum, lower its bill of materials, and reassert control over its flagship roadmap. Until then, most buyers can expect Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 to power the majority of next year’s Galaxy S26 devices, with Exynos variants likely limited to select markets.
