Nintendo Reveals New Star Fox Gameplay for Nintendo Switch 2 Ahead of June Launch
Nintendo has released an extended look at Star Fox, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 reimagining of the classic Star Fox 64. The new gameplay showcase highlights revamped visuals, updated stages, fresh control options, online features, and multiple game modes designed to bring the beloved space combat series to a new generation of players.
The story once again takes players into the Lylat System, which is plunged into danger after a sudden attack by the evil scientist Andross. With the galaxy on the brink of disaster, the Star Fox Mercenary Squad is called into action. The team includes fearless leader Fox McCloud, skilled pilot Falco Lombardi, engineering expert Slippy Toad, and veteran flyer Peppy Hare.
The latest overview trailer gives fans a closer look at the game’s fully refreshed presentation. Familiar locations from Star Fox 64 return with a major visual upgrade, giving the campaign a modern look while keeping the fast-paced aerial action that made the original so memorable.
Campaign Mode will let players fly across the Lylat System while taking on dangerous missions, battling enemy forces, and discovering branching routes. These alternate paths encourage replayability, allowing players to uncover more of the story and experience different mission outcomes.
Co-op play is also a major part of the new Star Fox experience. Campaign Mode can be played locally or online, with two players taking on separate roles. One player controls the ship as the Pilot, while the other handles targeting and firing as the Gunner. This split-role setup adds a new layer of teamwork to the classic Star Fox formula.
Nintendo is also introducing Mouse-Controlled Targeting using the Joy-Con 2 controller. This feature is designed to make aiming feel more precise and intuitive, especially during intense dogfights and boss encounters.
For players who want even more after completing missions, Challenge Mode offers new objectives tied to previously cleared campaign stages. These challenges give players a reason to return to missions, improve their performance, and test their skills in different ways.
Battle Mode brings competitive aerial combat to the game with 4-vs-4 online matches. Players can team up with friends or face random opponents across three different battle stages. Local multiplayer is also supported through GameShare, allowing multiple players to join Battle Mode even if only one person owns the game. Online GameShare through GameChat is also supported.
GameChat adds another social feature to the experience. Players using a compatible USB camera can appear in chat as Fox McCloud or other crew members through interactive avatars. These avatars can mirror facial expressions and movements, making online sessions feel more lively and personal.
Nintendo is also expanding the Star Fox experience beyond gameplay. A special selection of 10 tracks from Star Fox has been added to Nintendo Music. Fans can listen to the soundtrack on supported devices, including tablets, computers, and car systems through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The My Mix feature can also create playlists based on a player’s gameplay history.
Star Fox is currently in development for Nintendo Switch 2 and is scheduled for a worldwide release on June 25. With upgraded visuals, branching missions, co-op campaign play, competitive online battles, and new control features, the game is shaping up to be one of the standout Nintendo Switch 2 releases of the summer.
