New MacBook Air Set to Feature an Unexpected Apple Chip Innovation

The latest buzz from industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple is set to launch a fresh variant of the MacBook Air. Expected to debut next year, this new model will feature an ‘approximately’ 13-inch screen, hinting at a potential return of the long-discontinued 12-inch MacBook Air.

Apple’s intriguing approach to affordability sees the anticipated MacBook Air entering mass production in late 2025 or early 2026. Interestingly, instead of the usual M series chip, this model is expected to sport an A18 Pro chip. This marks Apple’s first foray into using mobile silicon in their laptops, potentially lowering costs but also affecting performance. However, Apple might enhance the A18 Pro’s power budget to boost its capabilities, though memory and storage could remain limited.

The choice to bypass older M series chips, which could conflict with existing 13-inch and 15-inch models available on e-commerce platforms, seems strategic. If priced strategically, the 12-inch MacBook Air could significantly impact the mid-range laptop market, challenging devices like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus laptops, especially if Apple introduces an overclocked A18 Pro into the mix. This would also revive the once-popular compact 12-inch laptops, offering consumers a fresh, portable option in a market where they’ve largely disappeared.
