Mysterious Acceleration: Earth’s Increasing Spin Puzzles Scientists

The Earth, known for its consistent 24-hour day, is spinning faster, and scientists are puzzled as to why this is happening. This change might set new records in 2025, specifically on July 9, July 22, and August 5. Typically, a day consists of 86,400 seconds, but on July 5, 2024, the Earth completed its rotation 1.66 milliseconds quicker. Such precise measurements are possible thanks to atomic clocks, which send data to the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service to make necessary time adjustments.

The reasons behind this rapid rotation remain uncertain. One idea involves the Moon’s influence; its movement away from the equator can alter Earth’s mass distribution, affecting its spin. This phenomenon, however, is not easily explained. Scientists have speculated about melting ice, movements in Earth’s core, and shifts in ocean currents, but none offer a comprehensive explanation on their own.

This acceleration impacts technology, too. Precise timing is crucial for devices like GPS systems, satellites, and financial networks, making any time variation significant if uncorrected. Researcher Leonid Zotov points out that the current acceleration surpasses predictions, foreseeing a potential slowdown soon. If these rapid changes continue, a leap second may need to be removed by 2029.
