MSI Explains Why the Claw 8 EX AI+ Gaming Handheld Costs So Much
MSI’s latest gaming handheld, the Claw 8 EX AI+, has quickly become one of the most talked-about portable gaming PCs of the year, but not only because of its hardware. The biggest talking point is the price.
According to MSI’s official listing, the Claw 8 EX AI+ is priced at $1,699, while major U.S. retailers have shown it at $1,599. Either way, this puts the device far above many competing handheld gaming PCs and makes it roughly twice as expensive as MSI’s earlier Lunar Lake-based Claw 8 model.
The higher price is not completely surprising. MSI has packed the new handheld with a major hardware upgrade, including Intel’s newer Panther Lake-based platform, also known as the Intel Arc G3 Extreme SoC, featuring Arc B390 integrated graphics. This setup is designed to deliver stronger gaming performance and better handling of modern PC titles, potentially reducing the need for upscaling technologies in many games.
However, even with the upgraded specs, many gamers did not expect the price to climb beyond the $1,500 mark. MSI says the current market situation is a major reason behind the steep price.
MSI’s product marketing lead, Andy Chu, explained that the company tried everything it could to secure memory and storage at the lowest possible cost. Unfortunately, ongoing shortages and rising prices for RAM and SSD components have made that increasingly difficult.
These price pressures are affecting much more than just MSI. Across the PC hardware industry, manufacturers are dealing with higher costs for essential components. Gaming laptops, handheld PCs, desktops, and other devices that rely heavily on fast memory and storage are all vulnerable to these increases.
For the Claw 8 EX AI+, the issue is especially important because premium handheld gaming PCs require compact, high-performance parts. Faster memory, larger SSDs, efficient cooling, and advanced chipsets all add to the final retail price. MSI appears to be positioning the device as a high-end portable gaming machine rather than a budget-friendly handheld.
The new Claw 8 EX AI+ is expected to offer a noticeable leap in performance compared with MSI’s previous handhelds. That means buyers waiting for lower prices on next-generation handheld gaming PCs may need to be patient. If memory and SSD costs continue rising, brands may have little choice but to pass those increases on to consumers.
