Motorola Razr Fold Emerges as a Fresh Challenger to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7

Motorola is back with a new foldable that changes the company’s usual playbook. After years of focusing exclusively on clamshell flip phones since the first-generation Moto Razr debuted in 2020, Motorola has now officially launched its first book-style foldable: the Moto Razr Fold.

First shown earlier in the year, the Moto Razr Fold is now making its full debut as a direct alternative to big-screen foldables like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7. Unfold it and you get a large 8.1-inch inner display designed for multitasking, reading, and media. On the outside, there’s a 6.6-inch cover display for quick access to apps and notifications without opening the phone.

One standout detail is the protection on that cover screen. Motorola says it’s protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, and positions this as a notable first for a smartphone offering that specific protection on this type of cover display.

In terms of thickness, the Moto Razr Fold isn’t chasing the thinnest-in-class crown. It measures 4.6mm when unfolded and 9.9mm when folded, putting it behind slimmer rivals like the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Oppo Find N5. The trade-off, however, could be a major selling point for power users: a large 6,000 mAh battery, which is bigger than the 4,400 mAh and 5,600 mAh batteries found in those competing foldables.

Motorola also packed the Razr Fold with serious camera hardware. The setup includes a 50 MP main camera with a large 1/1.28-inch sensor, a 50 MP 3x zoom periscope camera for closer shots, and a 50 MP ultra-wide camera for landscapes and group photos. For selfies and video calls, there’s a 20 MP front-facing camera.

Powering the phone is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 found in many top-tier flagships this year; instead, it’s positioned as a slightly less ambitious chip that reportedly performs around the level of last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Additional specs round out what looks like a premium, long-term device: 16 GB of RAM, up to 1 TB of storage, 80 W wired charging, and 50 W wireless charging. The Moto Razr Fold also supports the Moto Pen Ultra, and Motorola is including the Moto Pen Ultra in the box.

For software longevity, Motorola is promising up to seven years of Android OS upgrades and security updates, a commitment that’s increasingly important for buyers investing in an expensive foldable phone.

The Moto Razr Fold will be sold in three finishes: Pantone Blackened Blue, Pantone Lily White, and a special upcoming FIFA World Cup 26 Collection. It’s set for availability across most global markets, with pre-orders already live. Pricing is set at €1,999 MSRP.
