Motorola’s Moto G17 was officially announced just last week, positioning itself as a budget-friendly mid-range option. But early details suggest the new model doesn’t bring much to the table compared to the Moto G15. The most noticeable change is a higher-resolution 32 MP selfie camera, while many of the core specs appear largely unchanged.
Under the hood, Motorola has kept the same MediaTek Helio G81 Extreme chip, a processor that’s already starting to feel dated in 2026. The Moto G17 also launches with Android 15, an operating system that originally arrived in summer 2024, which makes the phone feel less “new” from a software standpoint right out of the box.
Where the Moto G17 is generating the most discussion, however, is Motorola’s software update policy. Motorola UK states the phone will receive two years of security patches, but there’s no promise of any major Android version upgrades. The German product listing also doesn’t clearly outline update coverage, leaving buyers without firm reassurance about long-term software support.
This is especially important in Europe, where EU rules require phone makers to provide at least five years of updates from a device’s launch date. In a statement shared with After Dawn, Motorola explained that its interpretation of the regulation is that a phone must receive security and feature updates, but major Android upgrades are not necessarily required. While that stance may remain within the boundaries of the rules, it strongly suggests the Moto G17 may not get Android 16 in Europe.
Even if this approach is technically compliant, it puts Motorola at a disadvantage against rivals in the affordable smartphone market. Competing devices in a similar price range increasingly offer longer software support, with some brands committing to multiple full Android upgrades over several years. That gap can have a real impact on buyers who want their phone to stay secure, compatible with new apps, and up to date with the latest Android features for as long as possible.
For shoppers considering the Moto G17, the takeaway is clear: the hardware upgrades are minimal, and the long-term software outlook looks limited.
