Moondrop Unveils Skyland: Open-Back Planar Headphones Featuring Lambskin Comfort and a Carbon-Fiber Frame

Moondrop is stepping deeper into the audiophile spotlight with the Skyland, a new open-back planar headphone built for listeners who prioritize high-resolution detail, spacious imaging, and a more natural presentation.

At the heart of the Moondrop Skyland is a pair of large 100 mm planar drivers mounted inside CNC-machined aluminum earcups. Moondrop says its patented Full Drive technology increases the effective diaphragm area that’s driven by the magnetic induction field compared to more conventional planar designs. The goal is cleaner, more uniform driver motion, which the company claims helps reduce treble harshness and timbre distortion for a smoother, more transparent sound.

Because the Skyland uses an open-back design, it’s tuned to deliver that airy, “out of the head” character many enthusiasts look for when listening to acoustic recordings, orchestral arrangements, and live performances. To maintain clarity while still protecting the drivers, Moondrop covers the open-back side with a protective fine-wire mesh grille that’s intended to preserve openness and transparency.

For specs-minded buyers, the Skyland is rated for an 8 Hz to 34 kHz frequency response. Moondrop also lists total harmonic distortion at under 0.05% at 1 kHz, a figure that targets listeners who value low distortion in critical listening sessions.

Connectivity leans into the premium crowd as well. Each earcup uses a 3.5 mm jack, and the included detachable cable is designed to connect to 4.4 mm balanced audio sources. Moondrop also includes adapters for 4.4 mm to 6.35 mm and 4.4 mm to XLR, making it easier to pair the Skyland with a wide variety of headphone amps and balanced outputs without having to buy extra accessories.

Comfort and build quality are clearly part of the pitch. The aluminum earcups are paired with soft lambskin earpads, while the headband combines a carbon fiber backbone with a floating, ventilated pad made via 3D printing. The “floating” support approach is designed to distribute weight more evenly across the head for longer listening sessions.

The Moondrop Skyland open-back planar headphones are priced at $799.99 and are sold through Shenzhenaudio. The headphones also come packaged in an aluminum case, reinforcing the Skyland’s positioning as a higher-end, audiophile-focused release.
