Minisforum MS-R1 Arrives: Pocket-Size ARM Powerhouse with Discrete GPU Muscle

Minisforum has unveiled the MS-R1 in Japan, a compact desktop that brings an ARM-based platform to the mini PC arena. At its heart is the Cixin P1 from CIX Technology, a 6 nm, 12-core processor built around eight Cortex-A720 performance cores and four Cortex-A520 efficiency cores. The A720 cluster runs between 2.3 GHz and 2.6 GHz, while the A520 cores are clocked at 1.8 GHz for low-power tasks. Graphics are handled by an Immortalis G720 MC10 GPU, and an integrated NPU delivers up to 30 TOPS to accelerate on-device AI workloads such as image processing, real-time translation, and smart office applications.

The chassis appears to mirror the MS-A1 design and even includes a physical PCIe x16 slot operating at x8 speeds. That means you can add a discrete GPU, though the compact enclosure favors low-profile or single-slot cards rather than bulky multi-slot models. This flexibility makes the MS-R1 a compelling option for edge AI, lightweight creative work, or a homelab server with GPU acceleration.

Internally, the MS-R1 offers a surprising amount of expandability and maker-friendly I/O:
– 40-pin GPIO
– UART
– eDP connector
– TPM connector
– BIOS update pins

External connectivity is equally robust, with a port selection aimed at power users and network enthusiasts:
– 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C with up to 100 W USB Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode
– 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
– 2x USB 2.0 Type-A
– 2x 10G Ethernet
– 1x HDMI 2.0
– 1x 3.5 mm audio

Rounding out the specs are up to 60 GB of LPDDR5 memory, Wi‑Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and configurations with up to 1 TB of storage. Taken together, the MS-R1 reads like a versatile ARM mini PC built for modern workloads: fast wired networking thanks to dual 10GbE, capable integrated graphics, AI acceleration for local inference, and expansion options that are rare in this size class.

Minisforum has not yet shared pricing or a release timeline beyond its debut in Japan. If you’re looking for a compact, power-efficient desktop with serious connectivity and the option to add a GPU, the MS-R1 is one to watch.
