Minisforum DEG2 Debuts: Thunderbolt 5 Speed Meets OCuLink Flexibility

Minisforum has pulled the wraps off the DEG2, a next‑gen external GPU dock unveiled at Japan IT Week 2025. This follow-up to the OCuLink‑only DEG1 adds Thunderbolt 5 alongside OCuLink, giving users the choice between maximum performance or maximum compatibility in a single enclosure.

The big deal here is flexibility. OCuLink continues to be the go‑to for raw, low‑overhead performance in many real‑world tests, while Thunderbolt 5 makes the dock plug‑and‑play with a wide range of laptops and compact PCs. Minisforum says the DEG2’s TB5 upstream port works with the latest 80 Gbps USB4 v2 as well as previous‑generation Thunderbolt ports, so even older systems can benefit. That includes Minisforum’s own devices that lack OCuLink, such as the MS‑S1 Max.

Under the hood, the DEG2 uses Intel’s JHL9480 controller and features a full‑length PCIe slot designed for full‑sized desktop GPUs, making it suitable for high‑end graphics cards. Beyond graphics, it doubles as an expansion hub with extra connectivity and storage.

Key highlights:
– Dual host interfaces: OCuLink and Thunderbolt 5 (upstream), compatible with USB4 v2 80 Gbps and older Thunderbolt generations
– Full‑length PCIe slot for standard desktop GPUs
– Intel JHL9480 controller for Thunderbolt 5
– Storage expansion: M.2 2280 slot for adding NVMe SSDs
– Additional I/O:
– 1x Thunderbolt 5 downstream port with 30 W Power Delivery
– 2.5 GbE Ethernet
– 1x 10 Gbps USB‑A
– 1x 5 Gbps USB‑A
– Power design: no built‑in PSU; supports user‑supplied SFX or ATX power supplies

Who it’s for:
– Laptop gamers who want desktop‑class frame rates without switching machines
– Creators and professionals seeking faster renders and accelerated workflows
– Mini PC users looking to add powerful graphics and extra storage in one setup

With its dual‑interface approach, the DEG2 lets you pick OCuLink for maximum throughput or Thunderbolt 5 for broad device compatibility—without buying separate enclosures. Minisforum has not yet announced pricing or release timing, but details are expected soon.
