Microsoft is undergoing another significant round of layoffs, affecting around 9,000 employees across various divisions. Although these cuts are being described as organizational adjustments, reports suggest a deeper strategy aimed at integrating more artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations.
At Meta’s LlamaCon AI developer event in May, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella highlighted the growing role of AI in the company’s processes, revealing that approximately 30% of their code is now created by AI. This move towards AI could be linked to the recent staff reductions. An insider at Microsoft confirmed to Engadget that the company is aggressively pursuing AI solutions to potentially replace human roles.
The memo circulated internally mentions goals like “increasing agility and effectiveness,” implying that AI could streamline operations significantly. This aligns with broader industry trends, as companies like Amazon have also communicated plans to incorporate AI agents for roles traditionally filled by humans.
The insider expressed frustration, noting the irony of receiving praise for the most profitable year for Xbox amid these layoffs. They conveyed dissatisfaction with current product quality and mentioned efforts to boost employee morale through motivational talks.
While Microsoft has not explicitly connected AI integration with the layoffs, it’s evident through their initiatives like AI-written code and AI applications in games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 that AI is a major focus. The company’s trajectory indicates a commitment to leveraging AI for future growth and efficiency.
