Microsoft Rewards enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy Xbox Game Pass, are in for a bit of a shake-up. Since 2005, the Microsoft Rewards program has allowed dedicated gamers to earn points through in-game challenges and store purchases, which could be redeemed for Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. However, those cherished auto-redemption perks are about to cost more.
Last July, Xbox Game Pass subscription prices increased, causing some concern among users. Now, members utilizing Microsoft Rewards are starting to feel a similar pinch. Recently, gamers who regularly auto-redeem their earned points for Game Pass subscriptions received an email announcing an impending price hike, effective April 20.
The increase targets users who opt for the convenience of scheduled auto-redemptions, and signs of this change are evident on the redemption pages within Xbox apps and Microsoft’s website. Although it’s uncertain if this applies globally, changes have already been noticed by many.
The points required to snag a monthly Game Pass subscription do vary based on a user’s rewards tier, whether Level 1 or Level 2. Previously, subscribers could auto-redeem Game Pass Ultimate for 14,000 points each month. Now, many have noticed that the requirement has jumped to 20,000 points. This looming adjustment suggests that by April 20, players might need more points to sustain their subscriptions, much to the dismay of several Reddit communities.
Over the years, hoarding Microsoft Rewards points has become a tougher effort. This new point hike makes it increasingly challenging to keep Game Pass subscriptions active without supplementing with cash. Yet, there’s a silver lining; Microsoft continues to enhance the Xbox Game Pass library with blockbuster titles like Avowed and F1 24. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers also benefit from Xbox Cloud Gaming, which has widened its reach across PCs, mobile devices, and even smart TVs.
Despite these additions, the soaring point requirements have made Microsoft Rewards less appealing, even for the most die-hard gamers. As price adjustments come into effect, loyal fans of the service will need to evaluate whether the added cost aligns with the benefits they receive.
