Micron Set to Launch Commercial Production at Gujarat ATMP Facility, Boosting India’s Semiconductor Drive

Micron Technology is preparing to take a major step in India’s fast-growing semiconductor journey, with commercial production expected to begin at its new ATMP facility in Sanand, Gujarat by the end of February 2025. The update was shared by India’s electronics and IT minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, signaling another milestone in the country’s push to strengthen domestic electronics manufacturing and chip supply chains.

The Sanand plant, backed by a US$2.75 billion investment, focuses on ATMP operations—assembly, testing, marking, and packaging. While this isn’t a wafer fabrication facility, ATMP is still a critical part of how chips reach the market. It’s the stage where semiconductor components are packaged and validated for real-world performance, making it essential for reliable electronics production across industries.

Micron’s move is significant for several reasons. First, it adds manufacturing capacity in a segment that supports everything from smartphones and consumer electronics to automotive systems and data center hardware. Second, it reinforces Gujarat’s growing reputation as a major destination for high-value technology investments, with Sanand increasingly being viewed as a strategic industrial hub.

For India, the start of commercial output at a global memory and storage leader’s facility aligns with broader national goals: expanding local electronics production, strengthening supply chain resilience, and creating a deeper semiconductor ecosystem that includes advanced packaging and testing capabilities. As global demand for chips remains strong—and supply networks continue to diversify—projects like Micron’s Gujarat plant place India in a stronger position to participate in the semiconductor value chain.

With production expected to begin by late February 2025, attention will now turn to how quickly the facility ramps capacity, what products and partners it prioritizes, and how it influences broader investment momentum in India’s semiconductor manufacturing landscape.
