Meta’s Threads Welcomes Global Advertisers with Open Arms

Meta has taken a significant step with its Instagram Threads app, announcing that ads will now be available to advertisers globally. After initial testing in markets like the U.S. and Japan, Threads is expanding its advertising capabilities to tap into its vast user base of over 320 million active users each month. This move will allow worldwide advertisers to reach a wider audience and utilize an inventory filter to manage the sensitivity of content their ads are placed next to.

New ad campaigns using Meta’s Advantage+ or Manual Placements will have ad placements within the Threads feed activated automatically. However, advertisers who prefer the Manual Placements option can choose to exclude the Threads feed from their ad campaigns.

While the ads are initially rolling out to selected markets, the plan is to gradually cover more locations. This expansion indicates Meta’s belief in the potential of Threads to attract advertisers, positioning it as a strong competitor against rivals like X, led by Elon Musk. Meta promotes Threads as an advertiser-friendly platform, with a noteworthy statistic: 75% of Threads users are already following at least one business on the app.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared optimism about Threads’ growth during a January earnings call, predicting the app could surpass 1 billion users in the coming years. At that point, Threads was experiencing daily sign-ups exceeding 1 million. This rapid growth is largely attributed to its integration with Instagram, leveraging the existing connections and networks of users to grow its base.

However, Meta’s dominance in the social networking sphere is under scrutiny, with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust trial questioning its ownership of key platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp. The outcome could potentially force Meta to divest some of these assets.

To enhance Threads, Meta has drawn inspiration from newer social networks such as Mastodon and Bluesky. Threads is working towards integrating with ActivityPub, a protocol that could connect it to the decentralized web, expanding its reach within the fediverse. Once fully integrated, Threads might become the largest player in this space, surpassing Mastodon’s user base.

Furthermore, Threads has taken cues from Bluesky to develop features like creating custom feeds and curated lists for new users. However, unlike Bluesky, where users have control over moderation preferences, Threads currently defaults users to its “For You” feed without offering such control.

With these strategic moves, Meta aims to position Threads as a thriving, global social platform open for advertising while continuing to innovate and grow within an ever-evolving digital landscape.
