Meta AI Arrives in Threads DMs, Bringing Private AI Chats to the App
Meta is bringing its Meta AI chatbot directly into Threads direct messages, giving users a new way to interact with the AI assistant without leaving the app. The rollout begins globally on Monday and marks another step in Meta’s push to make its AI tools a regular part of everyday social media use.
Until now, some Threads users in select markets could engage with Meta AI through public posts. With this update, the experience becomes more personal. Users can now start private conversations with Meta AI inside Threads DMs, ask questions, explore topics, get recommendations, and continue follow-up conversations in a more direct setting.
The feature is designed to make Threads more useful as both a social platform and an information tool. Instead of switching to another app to ask an AI chatbot for help, users can now access Meta AI while browsing conversations, posts, images, links, or videos on Threads.
One of the key additions is the ability to share Threads content directly with Meta AI. Users can send posts, images, links, and videos to the chatbot and ask for more context, summaries, explanations, or related information. This could make it easier to understand trending topics, research discussions, or get quick insights from content already circulating on the platform.
Meta AI is already available in direct messages across other Meta-owned apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Adding it to Threads brings the platform in line with the company’s broader AI strategy and makes the assistant more accessible across Meta’s ecosystem.
The move also shows Meta’s effort to keep users engaged within its own apps. By offering AI assistance inside Threads, the company is making it less necessary for users to open separate AI tools when they want quick answers, suggestions, or explanations.
Meta says it is still testing Meta AI in public Threads feeds in a limited number of global markets. The company is reviewing user feedback before deciding how widely to expand the feature in public conversations.
For users who prefer to see fewer AI-generated responses in their Threads feed, Meta is offering several controls. They can mute the @meta.ai account, select “Not interested” on Meta AI posts, or hide Meta AI replies that appear on their own posts.
With Meta AI now available in Threads DMs, the app is becoming more than just a place for real-time updates and conversations. Meta is positioning Threads as a platform where users can discover information, discuss ideas, ask questions, and receive recommendations all in one place.
