Mercedes-Benz Announces Major Investment to Expand High-Power EV Charging Infrastructure in North America

Mercedes-Benz is set to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience in North America through a strategic partnership with industry leader Alpitronic. The collaboration aligns with Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to enhancing the transportation and clean energy economy and will see an investment of $1 billion to develop an extensive Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging network across the continent.

Working with Alpitronic, Mercedes-Benz will introduce the advanced Hypercharger 400 technology to its charging stations, beginning in the third quarter of 2024. This rollout positions Mercedes-Benz as the first automaker in the US to scale such high-capacity DC fast-charging units, paving the way for superior customer experience regardless of the EV brand.

Andrew Cornelia, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, emphasized the importance of creating a quality charging experience for customers. He highlighted the significance of this investment in the infrastructure and the vital role of a skilled workforce in achieving success in this domain.

Alpitronic’s American operations have gained momentum with their US headquarters established in Charlotte, North Carolina, signaling the creation of over 300 new jobs. Further emphasizing domestic production, the chargers are manufactured in a facility in Wisconsin. With a strong focus on reliable performance, the Hypercharger 400 offers up to 400kW charging power, catering to a broad voltage range.

Mike Doucleff, CEO of Alpitronic Americas, expressed enthusiasm about the joint venture with Mercedes-Benz, building on their successful European partnership. Doucleff commented on the synergy between Alpitronic’s high-quality chargers and Mercedes-Benz’s legacy in luxury and performance, aiming to bring their collaborative success to the American market.

The advance of the clean energy workforce is a cornerstone of this massive project. Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging is creating employment opportunities across the charging infrastructure spectrum, from talent acquisition to local site development, including Operations and Maintenance (O&M) technicians vital for maintaining the network’s high uptime rates.

Each charging site will support Mercedes-Benz’s initiative, Ambition 2039, by being powered entirely by clean energy, dovetailing with the larger renewable energy employment sector in the United States.

Mercedes-Benz High Power Charging’s joint venture with MN8 Energy underlines the broader electrification strategy of Mercedes-Benz, aiming for a significant upturn in EV adoption through the development of a comprehensive EV charging map across North America.

As a pledge to providing a premium charging service, Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging endeavors to curate an EV charging environment synonymous with the brand’s values of innovation, safety, and service excellence. By using 100 percent clean energy, the company underlines its dedication to sustainable and emission-free mobility.

Alpitronic’s entry into the American market with manufacturing facilities and its new Charlotte office marks a key strategic development, showcasing the company’s aspirations for global reach and continued success in the high-power charging industry.
