MediaTek’s next flagship mobile processor, the Dimensity 9600, may still be a long way off, with current expectations pointing to a third-quarter 2026 launch. Even with that distant release window, it’s already drawing plenty of attention because it’s shaping up to be a true top-tier Android chipset that could directly challenge Qualcomm’s best Snapdragon offering in performance, AI capabilities, and gaming features.

A big part of the excitement comes down to the manufacturing process. While Apple’s A20 is expected to use TSMC’s N2 node, MediaTek is rumored to lean toward TSMC’s more expensive N2P process instead. The N2P node is said to deliver around a 5% to 10% performance uplift compared with N2. That choice also fits with the direction MediaTek appears to be taking with its flagship chip design, especially as it reportedly moves away from relying heavily on efficiency cores, increasing the need to squeeze as much efficiency and performance as possible from cutting-edge silicon.

On the CPU side, the Dimensity 9600 is expected to follow an 8-core setup similar to the Dimensity 9500. The rumored configuration includes one ARM C2-Ultra core, three ARM C2-Premium cores, and four ARM C2-Pro cores. These C2-branded ARM CPU cores are expected to be introduced around September 2026, lining up neatly with the timeframe in which MediaTek is most likely to announce the Dimensity 9600.

There’s also a chance MediaTek could tweak the layout to better mirror an upcoming rival flagship design, potentially shifting to two ARM C2-Ultra cores and three ARM C2-Pro cores, creating a 2+3+3 style arrangement. If that happens, it could signal an even more aggressive push for peak multi-core and burst performance, especially for demanding workloads like high-frame-rate gaming, advanced photography processing, and on-device AI.

Graphics and AI performance could be another major highlight. The Dimensity 9600 is expected to use ARM’s next flagship GPU, rumored to arrive as the Mali-G2 Ultra, also likely announced around September 2026. Expectations point to a design with more than 10 cores and built-in ray tracing support, which would further cement MediaTek’s position in the premium mobile gaming space.

More importantly, the GPU is rumored to work closely with the NPU using a dedicated Neural Shader Scheduler. The chip is also expected to support UFS 5.0 storage, a move that would improve read/write throughput for faster app loading, quicker file transfers, and better responsiveness under heavy multitasking.

That said, LPDDR6 isn’t guaranteed. With memory pricing pressures and wider industry inflation impacting component decisions, MediaTek may weigh cost control more heavily to keep pricing attractive versus Snapdragon-based alternatives. If MediaTek decides to launch a more affordable Dimensity 9600 variant alongside the main model, that lower-cost version would likely fall back to LPDDR5 memory and may also include a less powerful GPU.

Pricing and adoption are where things get especially interesting. The prior Dimensity 9500 is reported to have cost roughly $180 to $200 per unit, but rising costs mean the usual “next-gen costs slightly more” assumption may not hold. Even so, a well-known tipster has suggested the Dimensity 9600 could be widely adopted by Asian smartphone brands for their flagship phones, largely because it may offer a stronger cost advantage compared to Qualcomm’s next premium-tier Snapdragon option, which is expected to arrive with a notably high price tag.
