Mastering Instagram Map: Setting Your Location Preferences

Instagram has just launched a captivating new feature called Instagram Map, reminiscent of Snap Map, allowing U.S. users to share their latest locations and discover content based on geographic areas.

When you activate location sharing on Instagram Map, it updates only when you’re using the app, rather than providing continuous real-time updates. This differs from Snap Map, offering a balance between privacy and connectivity.

Meta emphasizes that location sharing is turned off by default on Instagram Map. Amidst safety concerns, Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, assures users that the feature is entirely opt-in. He also clarifies that the presence of location data from other users is often a result of location tags from Stories or Reels.

Although location tags were already part of Instagram’s map view, this new feature streamlines access to location-based content, prompting users to reconsider tagging locations on their Stories or Reels.

If you wish to keep your location private, here’s how to manage your settings:

To explore Instagram Map, navigate to your direct messages and tap the new “Map” option. A pop-up will inform you that your location remains private unless shared and guides you on altering these settings whenever you choose.

Configuring location-sharing preferences is simple. Initially, you’ll choose whether to share your location with Friends, Close Friends, specific users, or no one at all. You can adjust these choices by going to your profile, selecting “Settings,” then “Story, live and location,” and finally, “Location sharing.”

Even with location sharing turned off, you can view locations shared with you and discover location-based Stories and Reels on the map. For example, you can see a friend’s story from a nearby music festival or find a new restaurant through a creator’s reel.

Additionally, Instagram Map allows you to leave short messages or “Notes” for others to view, enhancing connectivity and discovery in your local area.
