Marvel’s Wolverine Delivers 60FPS Ray Tracing Without Needing a PS5 Pro

Marvel’s Wolverine on PS5 Aims for 60 FPS With Ray Tracing, Even Without PS5 Pro

Marvel’s Wolverine is shaping up to be one of the most impressive PlayStation 5 exclusives on the horizon, and new preview details suggest players may not need a PS5 Pro to enjoy the game at a smooth 60 frames per second.

Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine is being built with a 60 fps performance mode in mind for the standard PS5. Even more notably, the studio says ray tracing will be part of the default experience, giving players enhanced lighting, reflections, and visual depth without requiring Sony’s upgraded console.

That is big news for PlayStation fans who were worried the best version of Marvel’s Wolverine would be locked behind the PS5 Pro. While the more powerful hardware is expected to offer visual improvements, the base PS5 version appears to be far from an afterthought.

According to Insomniac senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed, delivering high frame rates was a major goal from early development. The team wanted Marvel’s Wolverine to feel fast, responsive, and cinematic while still preserving the visual quality expected from a first-party PlayStation blockbuster.

Insomniac has already built a strong reputation for technical excellence with games like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Those titles offered multiple graphics modes, including options that balanced 60 fps gameplay with ray-tracing features. With Marvel’s Wolverine, the studio appears to be pushing that approach even further by making performance and visual fidelity work together more naturally.

The focus on 60 fps makes sense for a Wolverine game. Logan’s combat is expected to be aggressive, heavy, and brutal, with fast attacks, close-range encounters, and destructible environments. A higher frame rate should make every slash, dodge, and takedown feel more responsive, while ray tracing can add extra realism to the game’s darker locations and detailed interiors.

Another reason Marvel’s Wolverine may achieve such strong performance on PS5 is its structure. Unlike Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, which are built around large open-world city exploration, Marvel’s Wolverine is expected to be a more linear, story-driven experience. That design choice gives the developers more control over each environment, allowing them to pack in higher detail, better lighting, and more polished action sequences.

This more focused format could help Marvel’s Wolverine stand apart from other superhero games. Instead of wide-open traversal and citywide activities, the game seems designed around atmosphere, cinematic storytelling, and intense combat encounters. That could be ideal for a character like Wolverine, whose stories often work best when they are personal, violent, and emotionally charged.

There had been some uncertainty about the game’s performance after earlier gameplay footage appeared to run at 30 fps. More recent footage, however, looked much smoother and seemed to target 60 fps. Fans questioned whether that footage was captured on the PS5 Pro, but Insomniac’s latest comments suggest the standard PS5 will also deliver a strong experience.

The studio has not yet shared every technical detail. Resolution targets, graphics presets, and possible upscaling methods remain unclear. However, Marvel’s Wolverine is already listed as a PS5 Pro enhanced title, meaning Sony’s more powerful console will likely offer additional benefits. These could include sharper image quality, improved stability, higher resolution, or enhanced upscaling through PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.

Still, the key takeaway is that PS5 owners should not feel left behind. If Insomniac delivers on its promise, Marvel’s Wolverine could offer 60 fps gameplay with ray tracing on the base PS5, making it one of the most technically ambitious superhero games on the platform.

Marvel’s Wolverine is currently set for release on September 15. As launch approaches, Sony and Insomniac are expected to reveal more about its graphics modes, PS5 Pro enhancements, combat system, and story details.

For now, the message is clear: Marvel’s Wolverine is being designed to look sharp, play smoothly, and showcase the power of the PlayStation 5, even for players who have not upgraded to PS5 Pro.
