Markus Witte Reclaims Leadership Role as Babbel CEO, Succeeding Arne Schepker

Arne Schepker, the CEO of the renowned Berlin-based language learning platform Babbel, has decided to step down from his role. Stepping into the spotlight once again is Babbel’s co-founder and former CEO, Markus Witte, who will guide the company through a transformative new phase that embraces the power of AI technology.

Instead of retaking the CEO title, Witte will navigate the waters as Executive Chairman and Managing Director. Schepker, who spent an impressive five years as the CEO and even shared the role briefly with Witte previously, has chosen not to renew his contract. He expressed that being a successful CEO requires a passion that goes beyond a mere 100 percent commitment—it demands a resounding 180 percent.

Schepker joined Babbel as Chief Marketing Officer in 2015 and has since relished in the accomplishments of his tenure, witnessing a remarkable 600% revenue growth to reach around $300 million and expanding the Babbel team to nearly 1,000 members. Under his leadership, Babbel made significant contributions, such as offering free language learning assistance to students during the pandemic and extending support to Ukrainian refugees, demonstrating an admirable sense of community responsibility.

Witte is expected to steer Babbel into new territories, highlighting the potential of AI in revolutionizing language learning methods. While Babbel has previously incorporated machine learning, it prioritized its collaboration with educational experts. However, as technology rapidly evolves, the company is ready to reevaluate and improve its strategic stance within the AI landscape.

Witte believes that Babbel’s next chapter can harness the potent combination of advanced large language models and its wealth of language expertise to enhance the learning experience significantly. This juncture offers an excellent opportunity to merge their vast pedagogical knowledge and amassed data with cutting-edge AI to provide a more personalized and effective language journey.

Additionally, Witte intends to concentrate on creating “moments of delight” for both employees and users—those instances that spark joy and satisfaction. It’s about cultivating an environment that celebrates the little things that make learning a language not just easier but more enjoyable.

In essence, Babbel is poised to optimize its resources and technological advances to fulfill its enduring mission: to bridge linguistic gaps and facilitate meaningful human connections through language learning. As Babbel embraces this dynamic phase, the future seems ripe with possibilities.
