Bungie has locked in the release date for its long-awaited Marathon reboot, and fans of sci-fi shooters finally have a day to circle on the calendar. Marathon launches worldwide on March 5, 2026, arriving on Windows PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
Alongside the date reveal, Bungie also announced a premium Collector’s Edition priced at $229.99, aimed at players who want an upgraded way to jump into the new era of Marathon.
Set on Tau Ceti IV, Marathon drops you into a grim, high-stakes science fiction battlefield built around tense scavenging and explosive player-versus-player encounters. You’ll infiltrate a derelict colony packed with hostile UESC security forces, dangerous environmental threats, and rival Runners hunting the same loot you are. Whether you go in with a crew or take your chances solo, the rhythm is clear: explore, grab what you can, and prepare for fast PvP fights where responsive gunplay, a low time-to-kill, and smart planning can decide everything in seconds.
If you make it out alive, you’ll exfil with your haul and use it to push your seasonal progress forward. That means building power over time, unlocking cosmetics tied to achievements, and crafting stronger loadouts with the gear you’ve stolen. Then you risk it all again by heading back in for an even bigger score.
Bungie is leaning hard into variety and replayability, starting with the different Runner shells you can equip. There are six to choose from, designed to support distinct playstyles such as Destroyer, Recon, and Thief. These shells act as foundations, but your real identity is shaped by what you loot and how you modify it. Weapons are moddable, body implants and core system upgrades further expand your options, and teams can coordinate builds each run to create combinations that match their preferred approach to fights and objectives.
Combat and social tension are baked into every match. You can queue as a duo or trio, or go solo in dedicated solo lobbies. There’s also the option to drop into in-progress crew lobbies as Rook, a lone scavenger with no starting gear and nothing to lose, making every find feel like a potential turning point. Even when you encounter other Runners, cooperation isn’t simple. Proximity chat can lead to fragile alliances to take down shared threats, but those partnerships can collapse instantly when the loot is on the line. And if you’re left as the lone survivor, you can still reboot your crew—even after death—keeping hope alive in situations that would otherwise feel unwinnable. Later in Season 1, Marathon will add a Rated mode for players who want a more competitive proving ground to measure skill and build a reputation.
Progression isn’t just about surviving runs, either. Tau Ceti IV is a battleground for influence, with six competing factions offering incentives to push their agendas. By completing faction contracts, you can grow your baseline power through season-long unlocks such as Runner shell upgrades, improved starting loadouts, expanded vault space, and access to specialized offerings that can be purchased with spare loot.
For players who want story alongside the chaos, the mystery at the center of Marathon remains a key hook. No one knows what truly happened a century ago when the original Marathon expedition went dark, and as someone trespassing in UESC territory, you’re positioned to uncover what was buried. As you venture deeper into the colony, you’ll uncover fragments of Tau Ceti’s past and piece together the truth behind the disappearance.
And when the path to orbit finally opens, Marathon’s endgame raises the stakes again. With a fully developed build, you’ll push into the Cryo Archive, described as the first floor of the UESC Marathon floating above. There, you’ll face raid-like security challenges while racing other fully geared crews through tight corridors where conflict is almost unavoidable. The ultimate goal is to crack frozen vaults, claim rare artifacts, and, if you can break through the seventh vault, confront an entity that even the UESC fears.
With its March 2026 release date now confirmed, Bungie’s Marathon reboot is shaping up to be a tense extraction-driven sci-fi shooter built on risky runs, deep customization, high-speed PvP, and a world filled with secrets worth fighting over.
