The gaming industry has been experiencing significant turbulence at the start of this year, with several prominent game development studios facing layoffs and restructuring. As part of these industry shifts, several established developers are finding themselves in a position where they must explore new avenues and ownership.
Recent insider reports suggest that Embracer Group AB is undergoing restructuring and is considering the sale of Gearbox Entertainment, the acclaimed developer behind the Borderlands series. It is expected that the conclusion of such a sale might occur by the end of March 2024. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford reportedly held a town hall meeting with employees discussing the studio’s future, which may include continuing under Embracer, going independent, or being sold to a different parent company.
The decision seems to be leaning towards selling Gearbox Entertainment to another company, but official confirmation and details are yet to be provided by Embracer. The decision comes shortly after Embracer’s acquisition of Gearbox in 2021 for $1.3 billion.
In a related development, it has been reported by Reuters that Embracer is also seeking to divest from Saber Interactive, the studio currently working on the much-anticipated Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. The sale amount is rumored to be around $500 million, and if completed, could result in Saber Interactive continuing the project as a private, independent entity backed by a group of private investors.
For gamers who prioritize playing on portable devices, there is also news on the hardware front. The Asus ROG Ally is currently available for $599.99 at Best Buy, while the Lenovo Legion Go is being offered directly from Lenovo for $649.99. Additionally, the 8BitDo Pro 2 Bluetooth Controller, a favorite amongst gamers for its quality and performance, is available for purchase on Amazon at $49.99.
The industry will undoubtedly be monitoring these studio transitions closely to see how they will impact future game development and the broader landscape of gaming. As companies navigate these changes, fans are hopeful that the beloved franchises and studios will continue to thrive in whatever form they take in the years to come.
