MacBook Ultra Rumored to Push Color Performance Beyond DCI-P3

Apple MacBook Ultra could bring a major OLED display upgrade with richer colors

Apple may be preparing one of its biggest Mac display upgrades in years. Future MacBook models, including the rumored MacBook Ultra, are expected to move from Mini-LED technology to advanced tandem OLED panels, potentially delivering thinner designs, better power efficiency, higher brightness, and dramatically improved color performance.

For around a decade, Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup has supported the DCI-P3 color space, which has become a standard for premium laptops, tablets, and creative displays. It offers strong color reproduction and is widely used by photographers, video editors, and designers. However, Apple’s next-generation OLED Mac displays could go far beyond that.

Industry reports suggest that Apple wants its upcoming OLED panels to cover at least 95 percent of the BT.2020 color space. That would be a major step forward from DCI-P3. While DCI-P3 covers roughly half of the colors visible to the human eye, BT.2020 reaches about 75 percent, making it much better suited for ultra-vivid HDR content, modern cinema workflows, and high-end 4K and 8K video production.

This shift could make the rumored MacBook Ultra especially appealing to creative professionals. With near-complete BT.2020 coverage, users may be able to perform color grading, HDR video editing, and professional visual work directly on the laptop’s built-in display without relying as heavily on an external reference monitor.

Apple has already introduced tandem OLED technology in the iPad Pro, where it helps deliver impressive brightness, deep blacks, and strong contrast. Bringing similar technology to the Mac could give future MacBook models a more immersive viewing experience while improving battery efficiency and allowing for slimmer hardware designs.

The current MacBook Pro’s Mini-LED display is already highly regarded for its brightness, sharpness, and HDR capabilities. However, OLED could improve areas where Mini-LED has limitations, including pixel-level contrast, blooming control, and response times. Each OLED pixel can turn on or off individually, producing true blacks and more precise image reproduction.

If the rumored timeline holds, the MacBook Ultra could arrive as early as fall 2026 with this next-generation tandem OLED display. An iMac with similar display technology is also expected to follow later.

Rather than focusing only on higher resolution or brighter panels, Apple appears to be targeting a broader display upgrade centered on color accuracy and HDR performance. For users who work with video, photography, animation, design, and digital art, the move from DCI-P3 to near-BT.2020 coverage could be one of the most meaningful improvements in years.

The result could be a MacBook display that is not only brighter and more efficient, but also capable of showing far more lifelike, vibrant, and accurate colors than current models.
