Apple’s newest MacBook Air 13 has arrived, and it’s a strong update where it counts. The base configuration now comes with the Apple M5 chip, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage, giving shoppers a more capable starting point right out of the box. In testing, the MacBook Air 13 M5 delivers excellent overall results thanks to noticeable gains in both single-core and multi-core performance, along with the kind of efficiency the Air lineup is known for.
But there’s one area that isn’t moving forward: MacBook Air battery life.
Despite the performance and efficiency improvements brought by the Apple M5, the MacBook Air 13 M5 doesn’t meaningfully outlast the MacBook Air 13 M4. In fact, battery performance is described as a slight step back versus the M4 model. When the display is pushed to full brightness, the MacBook Air 13 M5 ends up offering runtime that’s very close to the older MacBook Air 13 M3 as well—making this feel less like a generational leap and more like Apple holding the line.

What’s notable, though, is that Apple has still managed to keep overall battery life in the same neighborhood while improving performance in a meaningful way—something many thin-and-light laptops struggle to do without sacrificing endurance.
The good news is that the battery life on the MacBook Air 13 M5 is still strong for daily use. For routine tasks like web browsing, documents, email, streaming, and general productivity, it should comfortably last beyond a typical workday on a single charge for many users. While some Windows laptops can stretch battery life even further, only a small number manage to offer a similar balance of performance, efficiency, and overall polish in a lightweight design.
In other words, if you’re considering the MacBook Air 13 M5, don’t expect a big leap in battery longevity over the MacBook Air 13 M4. Instead, the real story is that you’re getting faster performance and a more generous base config—while keeping the all-day battery experience that makes the MacBook Air such a popular choice.
