Chinese chipmaker Loongson is accelerating its push into homegrown processor technology with a major new funding plan worth CNY 2.3 billion, or about US$342.7 million. The capital increase is aimed at strengthening the company’s work in information technology chips, with a strong focus on core CPU and GPU development.
According to the announcement, CPU-related projects will receive the biggest share of the funding. More than CNY 1.4 billion has been set aside for processor development, making it the largest investment area in Loongson’s latest expansion plan. This signals the company’s intention to deepen its research and development efforts in central processing units, a key area for computing performance across PCs, servers, industrial systems, and other digital infrastructure.
Loongson has become one of China’s most closely watched domestic CPU developers as the country continues to invest heavily in semiconductor independence. By directing a large portion of its new capital toward CPU technology, the company appears to be prioritizing long-term competitiveness in a market dominated by established international chip designers.
