Loona DeskMate is shaping up to be one of the more practical takes on an “AI robot” for iPhone users—because instead of cramming everything into a standalone gadget, it turns your iPhone into the brain of the system. The idea is simple: dock your phone, and DeskMate taps into the iPhone’s processing power to deliver AI assistance that works across your device, not just inside a single app.
According to the company’s messaging, this approach is designed to make everyday tasks feel faster and more natural. DeskMate is positioned as a system-wide AI helper that can handle common productivity actions like summarizing text, drafting or replying to emails, updating calendar entries, and even scheduling a Zoom meeting. While many of these tasks can already be done through individual apps, the key promise here is reduced latency—meaning less delay between what you ask and the action the AI performs—thanks to the iPhone’s high computing performance.
Another standout feature is how DeskMate uses the iPhone’s front camera to add context. Instead of relying only on voice commands, the AI can also factor in visuals and interpret gestures, aiming to make interactions feel more responsive and situationally aware. In everyday use, that could mean smoother hands-free control while you’re working at a desk, multitasking, or moving through a routine where voice plus gestures are more convenient than tapping screens.
Price and availability are still not finalized. Loona DeskMate is expected to launch through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, so the official release date and final cost haven’t been confirmed yet. However, the company says people who sign up with their email in advance may receive $100 off once the Kickstarter goes live.
