Google is on the verge of a significant transition in its smartphone strategy with the likely shift from Samsung to TSMC for its custom chipset production. The upcoming Tensor G4 might be the last Google chipset fabricated by Samsung as the tech giant strengthens its partnership with TSMC. Executives from Mountain View recently visited Taiwan, hinting at a potential three to five-year collaboration with TSMC.

This partnership is set to produce the Tensor G5, anticipated to debut later this year with the Pixel range, utilizing TSMC’s advanced 3nm process. This move aims to enhance Google’s competitiveness in the smartphone and tablet market by leveraging TSMC’s superior technology.

Samsung’s challenges with 3nm GAA yields have prompted Google to pivot to TSMC, seeking timely and cost-effective chipset production. By aligning with a partner familiar to most top tech companies, Google positions itself advantageously for the future.

The Pixel 10 series, potentially launching in Q4 2025, could be the result of this strategic partnership. DigiTimes reports that Google’s deeper collaboration with TSMC could extend beyond the initial contract due to TSMC’s leading technological capabilities.

In April, TSMC began taking orders for 2nm wafers, showcasing its leadership in semiconductor technology. Major companies like Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple are gearing up to use TSMC’s ‘N3P’ 3nm process, gradually shifting to the 2nm node by 2026.
