Lenovo has introduced the Legion R9, a new compact magnetic gaming keyboard aimed at players who want fast response times, a premium build, and a cleaner desk setup. Launched in China with a starting price of CNY 999, roughly $149, the keyboard brings a 68-key layout, wired 8K performance, and custom switch options under the Legion gaming brand.
The Lenovo Legion R9 uses a compact 68-key design, making it smaller than a traditional full-size keyboard while still keeping the essential keys many gamers need. This layout is ideal for users who want more mouse space during competitive gameplay without moving to an ultra-minimal keyboard format.
One of the biggest highlights is the switch selection. Lenovo offers the Legion R9 with standard Huano Classic HiFi Latte magnetic switches or a Legion-customized version of the same switch. The customized option keeps the key characteristics of the original switch, including a 550Gs magnetic flux rating and an actuation force of around 35gf. However, Lenovo says its collaboration has improved durability, increasing the expected lifespan from 100 million to 120 million keystrokes.
That boost in longevity could appeal to heavy users, especially gamers who spend hours pressing the same movement and action keys during intense matches. Magnetic switches are also known for their smooth feel and adjustable actuation potential, making them increasingly popular among gaming keyboard enthusiasts.
Lenovo is also focusing on acoustics with the Legion R9. The keyboard features what the company describes as a “6-layer HiFi” internal structure, designed to improve the typing sound and overall feel. While Lenovo has not provided a specific sound profile, Huano Classic HiFi switches are generally associated with a deeper, lower-pitched “thock” sound that many mechanical keyboard fans prefer.
Performance is another major selling point. The Legion R9 is available only as a wired keyboard, but that choice helps support its 8K polling rate. Lenovo says the keyboard is powered by a Neptune MCU that enables latency as low as 0.1ms. For competitive gaming, that could translate into extremely fast input recognition, giving players a more responsive experience during quick movements, rapid key presses, and reaction-based gameplay.
The build quality also appears to be premium. Lenovo says the Legion R9 uses an aluminum alloy shell, which should make it feel sturdy and dense on the desk. This type of construction typically adds weight, helping the keyboard stay firmly in place during gaming sessions.
For users who enjoy RGB lighting, the Legion R9 includes 150 ARGB LEDs across the keyboard. Lenovo has also added a slanted RGB light bar on the bottom, giving the keyboard a more aggressive gaming-style appearance. Buyers can choose between Legion-themed front-printed keycaps or transparent keycaps, depending on whether they prefer a cleaner look or more visible lighting effects.
The keyboard also supports quick polling rate switching through the FN key, allowing users to adjust performance settings without needing to dig through complicated menus. Lenovo is offering the Legion R9 in two color options, giving buyers some flexibility in matching the keyboard with their gaming setup.
At CNY 999, or about $149, the Lenovo Legion R9 sits in the premium compact gaming keyboard category. For that price, users get magnetic switches, an aluminum alloy body, 8K polling, ARGB lighting, and a space-saving 68-key layout. Lenovo has not confirmed whether the Legion R9 will launch globally, but the company has previously released several Legion accessories outside China, so an international release remains possible.
Overall, the Lenovo Legion R9 looks like a serious option for gamers who want a compact magnetic keyboard with fast wired performance, durable switches, premium materials, and strong RGB customization. If it reaches more markets, it could become an appealing choice for players looking for a high-performance 68-key gaming keyboard with a polished Legion design.
