Legendary Shooter Hits Record-Low Price: Now Under $1 on Steam for the First Time in 30+ Years

Steam players can grab a piece of video game history for almost nothing right now. Wolfenstein 3D, one of the most influential classic shooters ever made, has dropped to its lowest price on Steam more than 30 years after its original release. The game is currently discounted by 80% until February 15, bringing the price to under $1.

Released in May 1992 and developed by id Software, Wolfenstein 3D helped define what the first-person shooter would become. It arrived before many genre legends and introduced key ideas that later shaped iconic games like Doom and Quake. Even today, it’s often recommended to anyone curious about where modern FPS design began.

Part of the game’s distinctive feel comes from its technical approach. Wolfenstein 3D uses raycasting to create its famous “2.5D” environments: sharp right-angle turns, straight corridors, and maze-like rooms packed with secrets. There’s no true vertical movement, and you can’t freely look up or down, but that limitation became part of its identity—keeping the focus on quick reactions, rapid movement, tight resource management, and increasingly dangerous enemy encounters.

You play as Allied spy William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, fighting through Nazi forces with the goal of escaping Castle Wolfenstein and dismantling Operation Eisenfaust. The early moments are especially tense because you start with minimal gear, relying on a knife and pistol while you search for better weapons and supplies. Each episode builds toward a boss confrontation, with larger-than-life villains that range from twisted scientists to heavily armed commanders.

Despite its age, Wolfenstein 3D still resonates with players. On Steam, it holds a 93% positive rating based on more than 4,100 reviews. Many fans praise the fast, no-nonsense action, the satisfying secret-hunting, and the game’s unique atmosphere. The most common complaints are exactly what you’d expect from an early 1990s shooter: stiff controls and dated tech. For many, though, those rough edges are part of the retro appeal.

This sale is also notable because it’s the first time the Steam discount has hit 80%. The game normally sells for around $5, and earlier deals typically stopped at 75%, making this the cheapest it has been on the platform so far.

Wolfenstein 3D is also listed as Playable on Steam Deck, and it runs smoothly thanks to extremely light system requirements. However, handheld controls aren’t perfectly tailored by default, so using community-made control layouts can make the experience much more comfortable.

If you’ve ever wanted to try a foundational first-person shooter, revisit a 90s classic, or simply add a landmark PC game to your library for less than a dollar, this limited-time Steam deal makes it an easy pick—especially before the discount ends on February 15.
