Apple iPhone Ultra battery leak suggests smaller capacity than early rumors claimed
Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone is back in the spotlight, and the latest leak points to a battery capacity that may be lower than some earlier reports suggested. The device, often referred to as the iPhone Ultra, is expected to be Apple’s first foldable smartphone, and new supply chain details indicate it could feature a combined battery capacity of 4,883 mAh.
According to well-known leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple suppliers are preparing two battery cells for the upcoming foldable iPhone. One is said to have a capacity of 1,921 mAh, while the other reportedly measures 2,962 mAh. Since book-style foldable phones typically use two separate battery cells split across each half of the device, these figures would combine to create a total capacity of 4,883 mAh.
That number is notably smaller than the 5,800 mAh battery previously rumored for the iPhone Ultra. While this may sound disappointing at first, battery capacity alone does not always determine real-world battery life, especially when it comes to Apple devices.
Apple is known for optimizing iOS, its custom chips, display technology, and power management to squeeze long usage times from smaller batteries. For example, previous Pro Max iPhone models have delivered excellent endurance despite having lower battery capacities than many Android rivals. If Apple applies the same level of efficiency to its foldable iPhone, the iPhone Ultra could still offer competitive battery life.
The latest rumor also arrives alongside battery details for Apple’s future non-foldable flagship. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to feature a 5,235 mAh battery in Europe, while the U.S. model may reportedly use a slightly larger 5,425 mAh battery. The difference is believed to be linked to the U.S. version potentially removing the physical SIM card slot, freeing up extra internal space for a larger battery.
When compared with other foldable phones, the rumored iPhone Ultra battery would sit in a reasonable position. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 is said to use a 4,400 mAh battery despite having a larger foldable body, meaning Apple’s rumored 4,883 mAh setup would still be larger. However, some Chinese foldable flagships go much further, with models such as the Honor Magic V5 offering battery capacities of around 6,100 mAh.
Still, Apple may not be chasing the biggest battery number. Instead, the company could focus on balancing thinness, weight, durability, battery life, and premium design. Foldable smartphones require careful internal engineering because the hinge, dual-display layout, camera system, and reinforced structure all compete for space. A slightly smaller battery could help Apple create a thinner and more polished foldable device.
The iPhone Ultra is expected to be one of Apple’s most ambitious iPhone launches if it reaches the market as rumored. A foldable design would mark a major shift for the iPhone lineup and could position Apple directly against premium foldable devices from Samsung, Honor, Oppo, Vivo, and Huawei.
For now, the reported 4,883 mAh battery should be treated as an early leak rather than confirmed information. Apple has not announced the iPhone Ultra, and battery specifications can change before mass production begins. However, if the leak is accurate, Apple’s first foldable iPhone may rely more on efficiency and software optimization than sheer battery size.
