Kinesis Brings Meta’s Neural Band to macOS With Muscle-Based Controls

Meta’s Neural Band was originally designed as the control device for the company’s Ray-Ban Display augmented reality glasses, but a new open-source project called Kinesis is giving the wristband a much broader purpose. By decoding the device’s Bluetooth signals, Kinesis makes it possible to use the Neural Band as a hands-free, muscle-based controller for macOS.

The Neural Band works differently from traditional gesture controls. Instead of using cameras to watch hand movements, it relies on surface electromyography, or sEMG, to detect the tiny electrical signals traveling through the user’s arm. These signals are created when the nervous system prepares a finger movement, a pinch, or a small wrist action.

Because the sensors sit against the skin, the band can recognize subtle muscle activity before a gesture is fully completed. That allows users to interact with a computer through small, low-effort movements while keeping their hands in a natural resting position. In practice, this turns a simple wristband into an invisible input device.

Until now, the Neural Band was effectively tied to Meta’s own hardware ecosystem. Kinesis changes that by connecting directly to the wristband through Bluetooth Low Energy. The project bypasses Meta’s proprietary software and does not depend on cloud servers, making the band usable as a local input tool on macOS.

Once paired, Kinesis translates raw neuromuscular signals into standard Mac controls. A thumb-to-index pinch can act like a mouse click. Rolling the fingers can adjust system volume. A quick wrist flick can switch between virtual desktops in Mission Control. These actions give the Neural Band the feel of a futuristic controller, but one that works with familiar desktop features.

For Mac users, this could be especially useful in situations where a keyboard, mouse, or trackpad is inconvenient. It may appeal to developers, designers, accessibility-focused users, productivity enthusiasts, and anyone interested in alternative computer input methods. Muscle-based controls could also reduce strain by allowing smaller, more relaxed gestures instead of repeated physical clicks or broad hand movements.

At the moment, Kinesis is limited to macOS. However, wider platform support appears possible because the project is based on the wristband’s raw Bluetooth protocol rather than Apple-specific tools. That means the same approach could eventually be adapted for Linux or Windows, opening the door to broader open-source neural input across desktop operating systems.

Kinesis shows how wearable technology can move beyond its original purpose when developers explore the hardware underneath. Meta built the Neural Band for augmented reality glasses, but this project demonstrates that the same device can also become a powerful new way to control a computer. If support expands, muscle-based desktop navigation could become one of the most interesting developments in hands-free computing.
