The automotive world is buzzing with the news that Kia has ramped up mass production of the international version of its EV5 electric SUV. This pivotal step takes place at the automaker’s Yancheng facility located in China. The EV5, which made its initial debut in China back in November, is now gearing up to energize roads and customers globally, with an anticipated release in right-hand drive markets like Australia later in the current year.
Following its launch in China, Thailand had the distinction of being the first country to receive the EV5 for its consumers. This expansion signifies Kia’s commitment to electrifying the global automotive landscape.
The EV5 will complement the existing EV6 in the Australian market as a smaller option, catering to a broader audience with its versatility. Buyers in Australia can expect three main trim levels starting with the base FWD Air variant. This model is equipped with a 160 kW motor and a 64.2 kWh battery, capable of delivering an impressive range of up to 530 kilometers, equivalent to roughly 330 miles.
Advancing to the next trim, the Earth Long Range, potential customers will find an upgraded 88kWh battery that boosts the travel range to 720 kilometers, approximately 450 miles, on a single charge. The premium offering, known as the Earth Exclusive AWD, not only includes the larger battery but also enhances performance with an additional 70 kW motor at the rear. This high-end trim boasts a range of up to 650 kilometers, or about 400 miles.
There’s a palpable sense of anticipation for the arrival of the Kia EV5 in Australia, which is slated for June. However, the exact date of its launch and detailed pricing remain under wraps. Speculations are rife that the Kia EV5 Air could make headlines with a more attractive price tag compared to competitive models like the Tesla Model Y, which currently commands a price of A$65,400 in the market.
For context, the pricing landscape of Kia’s electric offerings was recently highlighted by the EV6’s starting price, which stands at 149,800 yuan, translating to approximately $20,800 or A$31,900. This positions the Kia EV5 as a potential game-changer in the electric vehicle segment, offering affordability without compromising on quality and range.
In addition to its Australian venture, Kia’s latest electric entrant is also likely to make waves in other regions, including launches planned for both Canada and Mexico. This move is set to strengthen Kia’s position as a global leader in the shift towards sustainable mobility.
As the world patiently waits for the official announcements, the EV5’s mass production marks a significant milestone for Kia and electric vehicle enthusiasts alike. With a blend of advanced technology, enhanced driving range, and competitive pricing, the Kia EV5 is poised to accelerate the transition to electric driving on a global scale.
