Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro could bring a major camera upgrade, but it may also push prices higher
Apple’s next wave of Pro iPhones could arrive with some of the most meaningful hardware upgrades in years, but those improvements may come at a cost. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to feature a variable aperture camera, a premium component that could significantly increase Apple’s manufacturing expenses.
The camera upgrade is shaping up to be one of the biggest reasons the iPhone 18 Pro series may be more expensive than previous models. Kuo suggests that the variable aperture lens could cost around 50 percent more than the 7P plastic lens used in the iPhone 17 Pro. For Apple, that is not a small jump, especially when the company is already facing rising costs in other key areas of the device.
A variable aperture camera would allow the iPhone to adjust how much light enters the lens, giving users more flexibility in different shooting conditions. In simple terms, it could help improve low-light photography, depth-of-field control, and creative photo or video capture. For users who rely on the iPhone as their main camera, this could be a genuinely useful upgrade rather than a small annual tweak.
Sunny Optical is expected to supply around 40 to 50 percent of Apple’s orders for the new camera system, which would make the company a major beneficiary of the iPhone 18 Pro’s upgraded imaging hardware. The higher cost of this component may also explain why variable aperture cameras have not become common across the smartphone industry. The technology has appeared before in older flagship phones, but it was later abandoned, likely due to cost, complexity, or limited practical benefit at the time.
Apple, however, may be taking a more advanced approach. Earlier versions of variable aperture smartphone cameras offered only a limited number of aperture options. If Apple introduces the feature years later, expectations will be much higher. The company could offer multiple aperture settings, improved manual controls, and better results for both photography and videography. If implemented well, this could make the iPhone 18 Pro one of the most capable camera phones on the market.
The camera is not the only expensive upgrade rumored for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Apple is also expected to introduce the A20 Pro chip, which could be the company’s first 2nm processor manufactured by TSMC. Reports suggest the chip may cost around $280 per unit, making it another major contributor to the rising bill of materials.
At the same time, Apple may also be dealing with pressure from DRAM pricing. If the company uses up its existing memory supply, it may need to purchase future shipments at higher market prices. That would add even more strain to Apple’s ability to keep iPhone pricing stable.
Taken together, the variable aperture camera, A20 Pro chip, and possible DRAM cost increases could make it difficult for Apple to avoid a price hike. A $100 increase for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max is already being viewed as a possibility.
Still, if Apple delivers meaningful upgrades in camera performance, processing power, and overall efficiency, many buyers may feel the higher price is justified. The iPhone 18 Pro series could end up being more expensive, but it may also offer one of the biggest hardware leaps in Apple’s Pro lineup in years.
