OPPO Could Beat Apple to Tandem OLED Phones as BOE Prepares Major Display Production Push
Chinese smartphone brands have built a reputation for moving quickly when new hardware technologies appear, often bringing advanced features to market before bigger global rivals. The next major display upgrade could follow that same pattern, with OPPO reportedly positioned to become one of the first smartphone makers to use tandem OLED technology in a mobile device.
A new report claims that BOE is preparing to begin mass production of 8.6th-generation tandem OLED panels, a move that could place the Chinese display maker in direct competition with Samsung. BOE is expected to announce progress at its B16 production facility in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, with a ceremony reportedly planned for June 17.
The B16 factory is said to have a monthly production capacity of around 32,000 sheets. BOE’s initial focus will reportedly be on 14-inch tandem OLED panels for laptop brands such as ASUS and Acer. However, OPPO is also said to be among BOE’s customers, raising the possibility that the company could introduce tandem OLED technology to smartphones before Apple does.
Tandem OLED is an important step forward because it uses a dual-layer structure instead of the traditional single-layer OLED design. This can deliver higher brightness, improved power efficiency, and a longer panel lifespan. These advantages are especially valuable for premium devices, where display quality, battery performance, and durability are major selling points.
Apple already uses tandem OLED technology in the iPad Pro, and the company is also expected to bring it to future MacBook Pro models. However, the iPhone lineup may not receive the technology for several more years. Current reports suggest Apple is exploring tandem OLED for future iPhones, potentially around 2028, but the company may wait until it improves thermal management inside its smartphones.
That delay could give OPPO and other Chinese phone makers an opportunity to move first. Apple is known for taking a cautious approach to new components, often waiting until a technology becomes more mature, reliable, and cost-effective before introducing it to the iPhone. Chinese brands, by contrast, are more willing to experiment early, especially when a new feature can help them stand out in the crowded Android market.
Still, OPPO’s potential advantage depends heavily on BOE’s ability to deliver panels at the required quality and volume. BOE has been working to strengthen its position in the high-end OLED market, but it has faced challenges in meeting the demanding standards required for flagship devices. Apple, for example, continues to rely mainly on Samsung and LG for advanced LTPO OLED panels used in iPhones because of their stronger production consistency and higher yields.
If BOE can improve its manufacturing reliability, the company could become a more serious competitor in premium OLED supply. That would not only benefit OPPO but could also reshape the broader smartphone display market by giving brands more supplier options and potentially lowering costs over time.
For now, the biggest question is whether BOE can successfully scale tandem OLED production while maintaining the quality expected from flagship phones. If it can, OPPO may be in a strong position to launch one of the first smartphones with tandem OLED technology, potentially beating the iPhone 18 Pro to a display upgrade that many users may not see from Apple until later.
The coming months could be important for the future of smartphone screens. With BOE pushing forward, Samsung facing new competition, and OPPO reportedly preparing to adopt advanced OLED technology early, the race for brighter, longer-lasting, and more efficient mobile displays is heating up.
