iPhone 18 Pro battery leak suggests a bigger win for eSIM buyers
Apple’s next Pro iPhone could bring a small but meaningful battery upgrade, and the biggest benefit may go to buyers in regions where eSIM-only models are expected to expand.
According to recent leaks shared by well-known industry tipsters, the iPhone 18 Pro may feature a 4,056 mAh battery in models that still include a physical SIM tray. Meanwhile, eSIM-only versions are said to come with a larger 4,288 mAh battery. While the difference may not sound huge, it could matter in daily use, especially when combined with Apple’s next-generation chip efficiency.
Compared with the iPhone 17 Pro, the rumored battery increase appears modest on paper. The physical SIM model may gain around 68 mAh, while the eSIM-only model may see an increase of roughly 36 mAh. However, battery life is not determined by capacity alone. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to use Apple’s A20 Pro chip, reportedly built on TSMC’s advanced 2 nm process. If that proves accurate, the phone could deliver better power efficiency, allowing users to get more screen time even without a dramatic jump in battery size.
The more interesting part of this leak is Apple’s possible wider move toward eSIM-only iPhones. Until now, some regions have continued receiving iPhones with physical SIM trays, which can limit the internal space available for a larger battery. With the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple is rumored to bring eSIM-only models to more European markets for the first time.
That could be a major upgrade for millions of buyers across Europe. If the leak is correct, customers in those regions may receive the larger 4,288 mAh battery by default, instead of the smaller physical SIM version. For users who care about battery life, this could make the iPhone 18 Pro more appealing than previous Pro models.
There have also been rumors that Apple may eventually remove physical SIM support worldwide across the iPhone 18 lineup. If that happens, it would eliminate the battery capacity gap between different regions and simplify Apple’s hardware design. A global eSIM-only iPhone would also give Apple more freedom to use internal space for battery improvements, cooling, camera hardware, or other components.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is also rumored to receive a battery boost. Earlier leaks suggested that eSIM-only versions of the larger model may include a battery between 5,100 mAh and 5,200 mAh, while physical SIM variants may sit closer to 5,000 mAh. That points to a similar strategy across the Pro lineup, where eSIM models get a slightly larger battery due to the removal of the SIM tray.
Apple has not officially confirmed the iPhone 18 Pro battery capacity, the A20 Pro chip details, or its eSIM plans for Europe. As always with early leaks, the final specifications could change before launch.
Still, if these reports are accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro may deliver more than just a small battery capacity bump. The combination of a larger eSIM-only battery, improved chip efficiency, and broader eSIM availability could make battery life one of the more noticeable upgrades in Apple’s next flagship phone.
