iPhone 18 Pro charging is faster, but there’s an important catch
Apple’s iPhone charging speeds have often trailed behind some Android rivals, especially models from Chinese brands that now offer 100W and higher fast charging for large silicon-carbon batteries. With the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple is finally giving users a noticeable speed boost, but getting the best results may require buying the right charger separately.
According to Apple, the iPhone 18 Pro can charge from 0% to 50% in around 15 minutes when paired with the company’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter and a compatible USB-C cable. That is a clear improvement over the iPhone 17 Pro, which takes roughly 20 minutes to reach the same 50% mark under similar conditions.
Apple also says a quick 5-minute charge can provide up to six hours of video playback. That sounds impressive, though video playback is generally less demanding than gaming, navigation, camera use, or heavy multitasking.
The biggest detail buyers need to know is that the fastest iPhone 18 Pro charging speed is not available with just any powerful USB-C charger. To hit peak performance, the charger must support up to 60W output, USB Power Delivery 3.1, and adjustable voltage supply.
That requirement narrows the options significantly. Even some high-wattage chargers designed for laptops may not unlock the iPhone 18 Pro’s top charging speed if they lack the necessary adjustable voltage support. In practice, Apple’s own adapter is currently the most straightforward way to access the fastest wired charging experience.
Third-party chargers from popular accessory brands will still charge the iPhone 18 Pro, but many may perform closer to the iPhone 17 Pro charging level. For example, a 45W USB-C charger may still take about 20 minutes to charge the phone to 50%, rather than the faster 15-minute claim.
For everyday use, that difference may not bother everyone. But for travelers, commuters, or anyone who often needs a quick battery refill before leaving the house, those extra minutes can matter.
There is also the familiar issue of what comes in the box. Apple does not include a power adapter with the iPhone 18 Pro, only a USB-C cable. That means users who want the maximum advertised charging speed will need to purchase a compatible adapter separately.
Wireless charging is getting an upgrade as well. With a MagSafe charger and a 35W power adapter, the iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50% battery in about 30 minutes. That makes wireless charging more useful for quick top-ups, though it still remains slower than the best wired charging setup.
The same charging conditions are expected to apply to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone Duo is also said to support similar charging speeds when used with the required adapter combination.
The iPhone 18 Pro series brings a welcome improvement for users who have waited years for faster charging on Apple’s flagship phones. However, the upgrade comes with a clear limitation: to enjoy the fastest charging speeds, buyers may need to invest in Apple’s compatible power adapter instead of relying on the charger they already own.
