Apple is quietly making a change in the iPhone 17 Pro that could be a game-changer for anyone sensitive to OLED screen flicker. In iOS 26, a new toggle in Accessibility lets users disable pulse width modulation, or PWM, the dimming technique used by OLED displays that can cause discomfort for some people.
PWM rapidly turns pixels on and off to control brightness. Most users never notice it, but a subset experiences headaches, eye strain, or dizziness—especially at lower brightness levels. With the new setting found under Accessibility > Display & Text Size, iPhone 17 Pro owners will be able to reduce or eliminate that flicker by switching to an alternate dimming method.
Apple notes that turning off PWM could affect how the display behaves at very low brightness, so there may be trade-offs. Even so, this marks a significant step: it’s the first time the company has directly addressed PWM-related discomfort with a dedicated option.
Until now, people sensitive to flicker often avoided OLED iPhones or simply lived with the issue. The new PWM toggle suggests Apple is listening, and it could make the iPhone 17 Pro far more comfortable for those users. At the moment, the feature is only confirmed for iPhone 17 Pro models, but it may also arrive on the standard iPhone 17 and the iPhone Air. There’s a good chance it becomes a staple in Accessibility settings going forward.
Beyond the PWM fix, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro are expected to bring front-facing improvements, including the A19 Pro chip and upgraded cameras. For anyone weighing an upgrade from the iPhone 16 lineup, performance and camera gains are compelling—yet for users who struggle with OLED flicker, the PWM toggle alone could be the deciding factor.
Key points:
– New iOS 26 toggle in Accessibility helps disable PWM-based screen flicker
– Designed to reduce headaches, eye strain, and dizziness at low brightness
– May slightly affect display behavior in very dim conditions
– Currently confirmed for iPhone 17 Pro, with potential expansion to more models
– Arrives alongside A19 Pro performance upgrades and better cameras
If you’re sensitive to OLED flicker, the iPhone 17 Pro’s new display option could finally make an iPhone comfortable to use day and night.
